compact underbelly exhaust

Post by TempKiwi »

Please note the technical terminology I use to describe the type of exhaust I am interested in....indicating I am on the VERY first steps of understanding the concept of the ikle exhaust systems some of the new bikes are coming out with such as the er-6n kwakka et al.

My question to can buffs, is what is the concept of the compact little units they put on the new bikes and on some race bikes where its a really short header, and a snubby can that sits on the underbelly of the bike? Buell do the same thing, but doesn't this screw with ground clearance? Can the pipes still be tuned at that length? Or do they have to snake them a bit to get the length? And wouldnt that create more resistance to the flow of exhaust gasses?

The reason I ask is to find out whether its possible on my vtr, as right or wrong I quite like the look of them.

Appreciate anyones input on the matter.

Hello, firstly i think you would have mojor ground clearance issues and secondly it would be a right pain in the ass trying to get the rear cylinder header pipe turned back and into the can under the bike.

I dont't think it would be worth the considerable hassle, but that is only my opinion, others may have different views.
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it!

Yeah, the rear header would be a biyatch definately, but impossible? The buels can manage it, albeit with higher engine mounts I understand...I found this on a vfr site:

yeah man, but then where do the cans go. So far the only think I can think of is what the VFR dude did, making a purpose build muffler to fill the gap between the sump and swing arm joint...but there's not much space....GOD DAMN IT JIM, I'M A DOCTOR NOT A PHYSISIST! 8O

lil oval ones just stuff em under the sump somehow. the ground clearance will be ok as long as they dont stick out too much

could imagine them being ripped off if coming over a bump or something :(

cool, I had thought of that, but they'd still have to be ikle ovals to not look like my vitter had turded itself. I'm in the process of selling my house at the mo, so once finished I'll have a play mocking something up and will post finding back here.
