I agree. It's quit common on higher mileage bikes. As an alternative you might not have to change the chains there are some slotted cam chain sprockets you can use instead and they will take up a small amount of stretch in the chain. I would also, as the engine is out open up one of your carb tops. If you have a dyno jet fitted you will have slots cut into the top of the needle. If this is the case it might just need setting up once the bike is back together.

Thanks all again i have checked it again and again today the tensioners and chains and cam sprockets and cams all look brand fire new no wear vissible in anything and the motor has done 30000 miles so its either been maintaned well or they are new whatever its good.I have also found a freindly local honda mechanic that will check timing for me at his house saving a packet on main dealer £50 an hour rip off as i think it might be one tooth out .Ill let you all know the outcome when i know. Thanks again for advice.Pete do you mean slots that the c clip fixes to to adjust needle height.as mine have these, dont original honda needles have adjustment.
If it aint fixed don't break it.

Yep!
The firestorm std ones are at a fixed height so they won't take a c clip.
You can pack them up with washers if you need to make it richer but that's about all you can do with them.

Valve timing is spot on so its time to get it back together and check more things on the way.Looking at the plugs the mixtures on front and rear cylinders are very different one being very rich and the other looks spot on shame i wasnt looking which was which when i took them out to do valve timing.
If it aint fixed don't break it.

Now you can cross that off the list of possibilities and move on. The different colours of the plugs is interesting, if you were thinking of replacing them, now would be a good time, as it won't take a lot of miles for new ones to colour up again for you to check :!: I bet you won't forget this time to remember which plug came from which cylinder :!:

If I was to make a guess I reckon the lighter coloured one came out the rear pot.
Honda use different size jets and different profiled needle in the front and rear to keep the burn the same whilst Dyno jet se the same front and rear so they often look slightly different to each other.
Another thing to check is where the choke cable enters the carbs. If the cable gets stiff (oo er Missis) it doesn't always seat itself properly into the carb. The outer sleaving can also catch in its holder inside the rubber seal by the 90 degree bit of pipe it travels through just before it goes into the carb so check there as well.

i had a problem like this -

i removed my carbs but didnt disconnect everything. put it back together and it idled really fast.

tried pulling the choke out as a routine check - stiff as fook

too it all to bits and found the choke cable splitter to be out of seat so stuffed it all together and its fine now

Get the carb balancing checked out now as it may cause your plug colour problem and if it is out by a significant degree it may/can cause CCT problems.
