I agree. It's quit common on higher mileage bikes. As an alternative you might not have to change the chains there are some slotted cam chain sprockets you can use instead and they will take up a small amount of stretch in the chain. I would also, as the engine is out open up one of your carb tops. If you have a dyno jet fitted you will have slots cut into the top of the needle.
