New gearbox ???
New gearbox ???
Hi all, I brought a new VTR the other week and have 1000km's on it now. I have'nt got used to the gearbox on the bike yet as I find it very clunky more than my 1100 Guzzi sport and beleave me three years on that bike and I still can't manage a nice change.
So are the VTR boxs like this or is somthing not quite right inside maybe more pratice and km's are needed.

One thing that will make a big difference to all gear changes especialy 1st to 2nd is to adjust the height of the gear lever properly.
If you keep missing second and getting neutral you probaly need to drop the lever height by 1 to 2 cm.
Just losen the lock nuts and turn the conecting shaft.
WARNING
One lock nut is left handed the other is right handed.
You may need to adjust it a couple of times to get it just right.

I've got the same problem with my 2nd gear. when i pass the second, i drive a little and after one or two second it jumps to the neutral. Before i haven't this problem. i wonder if my 2 gear sprocket in the gear box couldn't be dead. can i just change the sprocket of 2nd in the box or will i have to change all the gear box? (i'm a little afraid of the cost...)
thank you

clunky gearchange
check the cush drive, by grabbing the back sprocket and try to rotate it,ANY movement at all, acts like a slack chain, and kerlunk she goes. On my castrol bike, I fitted new rubbers, and you could still move the sprocket 6mm. Cured it on both storms by foldin a bit of ice-cream container over the webs inside ,wd40 helps it back together, no slack, and hey presto, no more kerlunk!!!
Hope this helps anyone, cos it is such a cheap fix ,its free

re gearbox,
it could be either the dogs on 2nd and 3rd gear sprockets or the shift drum wear or bent shift forks causing it not to engauge properly. All are replacable individually (even 1st and 6th but they are dear as they are part of the main and output shafts) and I may (that's a defo and they may even be brand new cogs) even have some kicking about I could sell ya. The biggest exspense will be dropping the engine out and then spliting the cases to get to the gearbox. Can't think at d moment but it may be possible to get the gearbox out (splitin the main cases) but leaving the heads on cos that'll save ya a few £££££. I think it is possible. If it's done lots of miles then go for a full overhaul and do the rings, valves and all the sheels whilast your at it. If it's jumpin out like you say then do it sooner rather than later as the last thing you want is it all too lock up if somit breaks inside.
