Oxford HotGrips not Working

Hi,

I know this probably isn't the most logical time to be installing a set of these, but hey, I'm getting older and some of those late evening summer evening rides can get chilly.

I've had a set of 2007 HotGrips installed on my storm, but they don't seem to be working properly. They've got a 'clever' little box o' tricks that will shut themselves off if there is not enough power to run them. The problem is that after about 1 mile of riding they switch off... the battery is fine and they've been installed as instructed.

Has anyone else experience anything similar?!?!

I don't know these grips exact working prodedures but are you saying they are connected to the bikes battery via this box of tricks? Does it have a thermal reset or something that is tripping out? I once had a set that the hi-lo switch wasn't working very well. I tested them by coupling them to the battery via straight forward on/off switch wired via the ignition circuit. That worked well and if it got too hot (which is basically never!!) you could just switch it off.
A multimeter could tell whether it is pulling current at all times too.

No, it's not a thermal cut off... it's works by measuring the voltage i think. So, if it thinks there's not enough juice in the battery for them to work they switch off. The thing is, it's a good battery and still they wont work. Was hoping someone else had experienced this and had an answer.

Looks like a call to Oxford Products...

Can you set it up with a battery charger on (and these grips running) so that the battery can't get depleted?

A voltmeter should show a charge rate of about 14-14.5volts with the revs above 2,000 but that can drop substantialy even with a good charge system if lights are on + grips etc.

You need to set a known voltage to prove the grips are at fault and not your bike charging system/battery so get the ol' digital voltmeter out!!!
