Unusual problem.

Post by rex »

Got home today to find oil dripping of bottom, front, of engine. Eventually traced it to coming from behind starter motor. Removed starter motor and it looks like there is a patch on the engine wall where oil is seeping through! Like its porous.

Anyone had this? Please tell me there's a cure other than new engine. Was supposed to be trading it in on a new bike!!

Mines a 98 R by the way.

had to replace my starter when i was rebuilding the bike but i can't remember any porous area's fr oil to leak through.Could the oil be coming down from the top of the front cylinder through a bad joint on the cam cover?

Nope, its def coming through the wall of the engine. Only when it's running though - must be the pressure.

Don't think it's supposed to be porous. :)

Rex, Get it clean and look closer. Cast alloy is definitely not porous. If its a faulty casting then it should have shown up ages ago. I'd guess its either cracked (unlikely) or leaking from somewhere else.

Has someone welded the cases in the past and made a horlicks of it? A bad weld can be porous....Look closeley for grinding/polishing marks.

TBH, I bet it is coming from somewhere else though (especially if it has just styarted recently)

If you're part-exing it, just smother some araldite over the porou area.
Should last til you get out of the showroom :D

Stormin' Ben.
I was gonna say clean the area thoroughly with surgical spirit (or similar degreaser). Then use some JB WELD (available now I think in Halfords and B & Q) and smooth it over the area. It is grey in colour so should blend OK (or spray over it with silver!).

Fantastic stuff that can actually be filed and shaped if required. :)

I know there were smilies involved, but please don't just paint over it or bodge it and flog it off to some unsuspecting sap.

Think if it spews oil out and the guy who buys it stacks it into a bus as a result...

Get it fixed.

The :) from me is because it works and cures a porous crankcase casting. It's not a bodge in the given sense that it'll give up five minutes after getting rid of the bike. Carried out as above with it applied correctly would see a long term, viable solution the changing the crankcase!!!
