new heads...thanks eBay :)

Post by mik_str »

I just picked up two virtually new heads from a 2004 VTR (300 miles on them, result of a "squidism" wheelie crash at 20 mph, lol) for my Storm on eBay. They come with CCT's, cam chains, the works I am hoping to get specs for cleaning up the ports (from Sir Roger of Revolution Racing; he had offered to send me the info some time ago, mentioned I could get it done by myself with a dremmel so, I will), and will then likely have them installed. I was thinking of having them milled but in doing research on the superhawkforum I came across a thread that mentioned you could also raise compression by splitting a head gasket in two (heck, if it doesn't work, I'll get them milled). I'll also get the sprockets grooved for indexing (may explore possibility of using exhaust cams on intake too, something that a superhawkforum member had mentioned at one point, but we'll see about that one). When all is said and done, I'll have two spare CCT's (although mine are virtually new), and new camchains and the works in the heads. Combined with indexed cams, slightly raised compression and massaged ports, I should get a decent little bump in the mids Not sure when I'll get them installed but there is no rush as the bike is running well now anyhow.

One last thing (hijacking my own thread, lol), based on input I got from Alan, I have gone back to a stock airbox lid. Given the VTR's well-established sensitivity to airbox mods, I think he may well be right so, back to what worked well before

cheers

Wow, you got some screaming deals! I have Microns on my Storm and am very happy with them. I just re-packed (and painted) them a few weeks ago so I should I go be good to go for a while now. In terms of the heads, I got two complete head assemblies (as mentioned previously,...) for $250 US delivered to my door...pretty hard to beat that! :) Once I get them set-up and installed, I should be able to sell my old ones for a few $$$ (not too much as I know they have miles on them now, whatever I get is just a bonus as we say) but the net cost will be quite minor. The icing on the cake is that I won't lose any riding time while the ports are being done (still hoping to be able to do it myself).

cheers

Sounds as if you both did very well price wise :!: Well done :!:
I'll be interested Mik to hear how you get on with the cylinderhead work, I know it's going to be a long term project but do tell us how it all goes when you do get around to it :D

Hi again,

I too think I did pretty well price-wise (kind of helps to make up for all the other times I've been screwed, lol) I have began e-mail correspondence with Sir Roger in regards to the heads and was pleased to learn that they can be replaced without taking the engine out (should represent major $$$ savings for me as I will have to have that part of the work done by my dealer since I have no garage to work in per se). How do you say...relief? lol I am hoping to be able to do the porting work myself but I'm wise enough to know my limits so I may have to "farm it out". I must confess that there are times I truly wish I lived in the UK so I could just ride up to REvolution Racing and let Roger perform his magic in person rather than through the medium of e-mail. The man is a true gentleman and has helped me a great deal in recent years and for that I am extremely grateful.
Getting back to the bike, what I hope to achieve is a noticeable boost in the mid-range. I am not looking to build a rocket to take on R1's and Fireblades. I use the bike for sport-touring and seldom if ever rev it past 7K but I really love the instant hit I get when I roll on it to pass a line-up of cars...woohoo :D . It seems to me that a little bump in compression and some better flowing heads would only make the silly smile, well, sillier, lol I would love to end up with @ 110 rwhp and @ 72 ft-lbs of torque....

I'll keep you posted and thanks again for your interest and help :)

cheers
