Newbie saying hello with bad news...

Post by jooshead »

Hi all,

I'm posting a sort of warning as my first message here.

Please stay away from Michellin Pilot Sports, or Banana Lard b8stard as I know call them.

Going around Maclaren bend doing a track day at Brands this:

was turned into this:

Image

Why??? Well I' really no too sure. I was going around the bend the same way I had 3 times before, this being my 5th lap from cold. The back end just kicked out from underneath me and I was dropped onto the floor.

This Gallery will show you how fantastic the crash posts and engine armour combination worked to protect the bikes really expensive bits.

Anyways project JTB (joos' trackday bike) has now started as it'll cost me what I can sell it for to get it road legal again.

The new spec will be:

CBR900RRT Front end. (left fork leg is shot on this one now.)
Stage1 engine tune and dynojet kit. (inc ignition advance and manual cam chain adjuster)
Race fairing kit maybe from that Italian kevlar forming god.
Race subframe with either Kevlar or pattern single seat pod. (orginal sub frame is totaled...)
Technoflex rear shock.
Pirrelli Super Corsas all round.

Now I need to stop feeling miserable for myself and start saving ALOT of cash...

Nice site BTW I'll try to post some updates as the project carries on...

Oh well...

Oh man, totally feel for you - that was a rather spanking gorgeous bike. Bit of a cliche these days but a least your ok - the bike can always be repaired.

Glad to hear you OK.

Don't know if it's the right time to ask but I wanted to know what make and where you got a few of the bits on your bike. I'm planning on doing track days at Knockhill next year and want to get the bike set up for that but still keep it useable for my commuting run.

1. Rearsets?
2. Engine armour?
3. Crash Bungs ( not really convinced about these really but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Alan.

P.S. Try http://www.performancemotorcycleparts.co.uk/ for race bodywork.

Jeesus, must have been quite a nasty stack to do the subframe in like that. At least you're ok m8.

Thanks for the kind words. It's just my ego that's still sore...

Bits:

Rear Sets from Harris Performance: Spankingly loverly. But I think Gilles now does them too.

Engine Armour : Creations
Crash Posts: R&G

Just so you know the body work and the radiators and the engine were saved by the posts. The engine armour only saved the clutch.

BTW you'll be able to buy the armour & posts as a kit from http://www.bikejohnny.com sometime next month when their shop is finished.

Despite most of the bodywork being OK I've contacted the Italian fella, prices are more expensive that simple fibre glass pattern stuf but not at all bad for a complet race fairing that looks the mutts.

Off to find a CBR900RR front end now.... tumdy tumty tum.... OUCH!!!!!

Just a quick question about the crash posts. I've read the fitting instructions and just wanted to know if the post that comes with the kit replaces the origonal engine bar or not.

Extract from R&G site :-
Undo fairing both sides
Gently pull forward
Undo engine bolt
Mark end of engine bar with white paint/ tippex
Put fairing back
Push marked end up against fairing
Repeat for the otherside

Once both sides are marked, remove fairing completely
Pilot drill on centre of marks from inside edge of fairing both sides
Refit fairing, check holes in correct position
Using 16mm tank cutter
Carefully drill holes outside edge inwards.
Take a sharp knife and deburr holes
Take R & G kit
Remove bobbins (8mm Allen key)
Remove the chunkier bar end (22mm spanner)
Slide bar through engine bolt position
The bar end with the 14mm A/F dimension should fit on the recess
of the engine on the Nearside. Refit other end, tighten to recommend
torque (not available from R & G)
Refit fairing
Bar ends should just come through holes
Refit bobbins.
Al.

P.S. What were you beoing quoted for the Kevlar bodywork? Is there any difference between the price of the road bodywork and the race bodywork he does??

Yep the RG crash bungs replaces the OE engine bolt. Takes about 2 minutes to fit! Just undo the bolt on the right hand sideof the bike, remove the left hand bung and then tap out the OE engine bolt using the RG item and voila! Its in. Then just replace the left bung and tighten and go and sit down thinking to yourself - "Jesus, that was easier then I expected!!"

Excellent!! I think I might just get me a set!

I never really liked any of the other crash bungs for the VTR before because they all seemed to use an extender bar that goes onto the engine mounts and then rests on the cross beam on the frame. Not the best of designs in my opinion. RG have got the design right IMHO and I don't mind having to cut a hole in the fairing for all the time it takes.

I take it form that reply Wayne you've got yourself a set of them as well??

Cheers for the info.

Alan.

Yep gota set and installed them on Thursday (5 days after dropping the bike on a roundabout - Anyone else thinking Horse, Stable Door?!)

I got a set with white bungs but wish Id gone for black now as the white ones are starting to look a little grubby after just 100 miles into London and back.

Cheers
