CT failed advice please.

Post by GSMAN »

Rear replaced 3 000 miles ago as rattling, however riding away from lights steadily heard the dreaded rattle, dipped clutch and stopped and turned engine off. Re started for 10 seconds to check with helmet off, loud rattle present think on front cylinder could hear chain rattling but engine ticking over ok and no lound knocks or back fires, hoping will just have to replace tensioner, which had only covered 10K. Will I have to check timming chain not jumped, what about valve damage, hope I have got away with it thank god not on unsual saturday run when it failed.

Don't try to start it again or turn it over on the starter :)

You need to whip the cam covers off to check the timing before replacing anyway, so fit the new one and time it up - then see what happens.

If the valves are damaged, it won't run properly or will still rattle.
You can compression test to confirm it but I would go ahead and fit the new one first.

If you check your timing marks before you do any work and they still line up you might have got away with it.
Good luck!

Failed Cam chain tensioner update

Post by GSMAN »

Still no news as yet but looked at hstory of bike and front tensioner replaced 4 years ago and only done 4500 miles whats going on.I have replaced rear tensioner 3000 miles ago assuming it is the front that has gone either way its not good news and rocks confidence in what is otherwise a great bike. Well the 2006 BMWR1200GS for now, so at least I am not off the road, so luckier than some I suppose.
Will keep posted as to progress in case anyone is interested.

Its a Result

Post by GSMAN »

Well it seems there is a god after all, bike was stripped my a mate who is a mechanic. Inlet valve gear was spot on front (exhaust valve gear chain had jumped only three teeth. This plus I was only riding at a gently 30MPH seem to have saved the day. New tensioner fitted on front cylinder, bike purrs, no misfiring or or spitting back, no rattles, thank god.
Front tensioner seems to have simply retracted completely without ANY WARNING NOISES!!!!!!!!! which is worrying as stated earlier it has been in 4 years (previous owner did little miles) but has only covered 3500 miles. What the hell is going on Honda this bike has covered 15000 miles and is on its third pair of tensioners. I love the bike but at present now find it hard to trust it. What if failure occurred at 8000 RPM? how long will new ones last? rear already been in 3000 miles are new ones any improvement on the earler ones?

You were one of the fortunate ones, with no bent valves :D

Just to make you feel a little better, in most cases the CCT's fail when the engine is on the over run, not when you are powering your bike on. Tension on the springs (I have found this out from research) change at approx 3,000 rev's and this seems to be when a spring breakage if it's going to happen, happens :!:

LotusSevenMan and myself have done quite a lot of research on why some CCT's seem to last a lot longer than others. We've come to the conclusion that the originally fitted CCT's last longer than the replacement ones. The reason being the replacement ones are packed up ready to be shipped out to the suppliers with the plunger in a fully retracted state :!: The spring is therefore under full tension (which it never is when in use on the bike) until it has been sold and fitted. The plunger normally protrudes out from the CCT body by approximately half of it's length when it's doing it's job of tensioning the cam-chain.

So to re-cap on that, a replacement CCT could be sitting in a warehouse for any number of months, not to mention shipping time, with it's spring under full tension, we believe that this is what is shortening their lives. This of course never happened to a new bike being built at Honda.

If you've not already seen this you may find it interesting :!:
