Track day noise levels

Post by BarryH »

Looking to do a Focused Events track day at brands hatch. Problem that I've got is that there is a 95db limit on exhausts. Now I know that my bike will never pass this as I've a set of Leo Vinci SBK's fitted. Yet they just about scrape through an MoT and no, they don't have any baffles fitted!

I don't have any standard cans for the storm as I sold them just after fitting the Leo's. Do I "blagg" it or try and get the noise level down. Can't see how I'm going to do this without changing the cans which is a bit expensive just for a track day.

Get a set of "Decible Killers"

Essentialy, removable baffles for cans that dont have them normally.

Even then 95db is gonna be tough. Even on standard cans it's gonna be close.

Of course, depends how they measure it too - from how far away at what revs etc.

TBH I wouldn't bother and rebook for a noisey day. Nowt worse than paying your money and getting stuffed when they wont let you on, and wont refund you neither :(

Something like this if it will fit:

you need to watch with the Viper baffles, as you can see from the pics in the advert, it is straight and doesn't fit into an end can that has a spout that comes out at an angle..again as per the pic, i think they look terrible, nutty got one for her MOT, and i ended up drilling one from my blu flames and fitting it to her can for the test.
you could also look at something like this which the tube has a kick in it and will fit the spout of the end can better:

http://www.performanceracingparts.co.uk ... asp?cat=21

still expensive though as you'll be buying two.

Scorpion do them as well to fit their cans but they are £30 each 8O 8O 8O .

Here's the Viper ones on Demon Tweeks to give you an idea of how much they go for :

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ ... =BIKEXCNRK.

£9.68 inc VAT, just tried the link and it only takes you to the front page, if you look at tuning/exhausts & accessories you'll get em in there.

if its just for a track day and the MOT, you might not be to worried about how they look.

95db will be tough to beat.
There's noise restrictions at Castle Combe track near me and my totally Std Sp just squeezed through at 100 db.
Most of the new Yammies and Susuckies are failing due to there little stubbies not being adequate. I'm not saying it can't be done but you'll probably drop so much performance by stuffing up your pipes to get them through testing you wont be able to enjoy it when you get on track

if you can, stick the db killer in the inlet

or pack the outlet with tinfoil and gaffertape, a sieve and some wire wool

Looked at those aftermarket "db killers" and they all seem pretty naff as in that theylook pants and ill fitting. This afternoon I dug out the MiG welder and played about with a few lengths of inch steel pipe. Welded a plate over one end and cut a plate to fit the outlet of my pipes.

Drilled the thing with 4 rows of 6 mm holes the full length and heated it and bent it to suit the angle of the outlet. It doesn't look unlike the end of a standard can now apart from the fact that theres 2 little tangs on the end where I drilled and tapped them so I could clamp them internally to the can outlets.

They've reduced the howling growl to a more acceptable scream but I'm not sure how they'll affect performance. I could drill another line of holes or even drill the end plates to flow a bit more gas. Still have no way of measuring the db levels though!

Draw back of riding a vee twin with straight thru cans really. Music to my ears, but hell raising raucus to others......pah they have no soul!

I know of two sets of cans that are going very cheap, one set are as new in packing, the second have a small scrape where they hit the deck but no damage to functionality. I can pm you the email address if you like, it is my father in law who had one a few years back and came off it twice and got the cans on insurance.

They live near Stevenage so a short journey from you to save on the £20 postage?

If your are close to the limit, I've a top-tip to reduce the noise

When revving the bike

i) they dont often check your rev counter so under-rev
ii) put the bike in gear and have the clutch at the biting point
takes a bit of concentration but it damps out a hell of a lot of engine noise which contributes significantly to the overall reading

Also, make sure they are the correct angle and distance from the can
ACU guidelines wrote:50cm from the exhaust pipe at an angle of 45° measured from the center-line of the exhaust end and at the height of the exhaust pipe, but at least 20cm above the ground. If this is not possible, the measurement can be taken at 45° upwards.
1000cc twin should be revved to 5000rpm

The other tip I've seen work is to take a coke can, remove the silencer, pierce a couple of holes in the bottom of the can& put the exhaust can back on over it
The can will get blown away in reasonably short order but will last long enough for your to pass scrutineering :)
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!
