Clunk - quit - what gives?

Post by robemac »

Writing from PEI, Canada. It is warm today, 32 deg. I have a 2001 Storm, just turned 25,000 KM last week. Mods: jet kit, high mount exhaust, K&N filter, hugger, steering damper, RC51 front brake master cylinder, steel brake lines, that's about it.

I have had the bike a year. I like it. I was aware of the CCT issues before I bought it. I bought the service manual and plan on replacing the stock tensioners with new ones, probably in the fall as I don't have time to do it know.

The bike, on colder days, while choked and warming up, will make a yet unidentified and disturbing mechanical clunk (like a chug, and you can feel it as well as hear it) and will stall if the throttle is applied before it gets to normal temps. Fine, but today it did this as I approached a traffic light when well warmed up. It restarted ok, but I do not know what this is.

I don't think it is the CCTs, based on what I have read, but this mechanical oddity does not really make any sense. The bike runs perfectly 90-95% of the time, if not more.

Does anyone have any comments on what this may be, or if they experienced it also?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,
Welcome from PEI Canada :!:
Mine spits back through the carbs and dies on me when it feels like, by that I mean it doesn't happen everyday, it may not happen for 2 or 3 days, then it can happen 2 or 3 times in one day. It can happen when it's just sat in traffic while ticking over, or occasionally and more annoying, it will cut out just as I am pulling away from a 'T' junction. I don't know if this is the same thing as you are experiencing or not but it does sound like it imo :!: Some owners say they experience it, and just live with it, while others say their bikes don't do it at all. I find keeping the tick over at a good 1200rpm does help :!:

HI Robemec.
When was the last time it was serviced? If it wasn't doing it before it could just be a little out of sync and the carbs need balancing or the plugs need replacing.
Mind you, plenty still do it after it has just been serviced  Definitely turn the tick-over up to 1200-1300 rpm.

I run my tickover at 1300 cold (temp needle has just moved) I find it helps.

Might also gain from rerouting the carb air hoses as in here:
