Misfire

Post by headgear »

Hi all, any help appreciated 've got a 99 storm / 12000 miles, when riding between 1500 and 3000 rpm when road speed and engine speed are equal so to speak the bike starts jibbing like someone is trying to pull me back. I've changed the plugs but no difference also the warmer the bike gets the more prominent the fault gets, the bike starts on the button and ticks over perfectly it also accelerates with no misfire etc and above 4000 rpm there is no noticeable jibbing. Any ideas please :?:

Have the carbs been balanced lately :?:
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

It could be rich, it could be lean :?
What's your set up? Is everything std or has it been played with?

I've got the same prob with mine, been doing it a couple of years now since i got it jetted, the fuelling was spot on, but it backfires through the carbs, and when you are trying to do slow manouvers or slow corners i need to keep the clutch covered to try and stop it stalling and dropping it, lol. not found a solution for it yet...and like you said after a long run, for instance on the motorway for a couple of hours, when i hit a town, its a nightmare to ride and keep running.

Everything is as I bought it back in 2000, though I had it stood for 7 months with out starting, I recharged the battery but flattened it a couple of times before I got out an industrial booster / starter (that spun the starter i'll tell you) just wondering if I might have damaged any of the electronics with such a severe kick. Is it possible for a coil to be failing? Carbs were balanced at the last service as far as I know :?:

If it was left standing with carbs not being drained for 7mths, I would say a carb strip down and clean will be required!

Would this be a major task, and would I need to buy any spare parts before hand please?

Thanking all who have taken the time to advise.

It might just need a good run and a couple of tanks of decent peterol flushing through it. Try adding some carb cleaner to the fuel and see what that does. Also, it might be worth draining the float bowls on the bottom of the carbs and see if any crap/water comes out. Dead cheep to do, you only need a bit of pipe and a milk bottle, just turn the fuel tap off under the tank and open the drain screws on each carb.
