Cutting Out

Post by Norton500 »

Anyone know why a Storm will cut out at idle intermittantly? This happened to me today 5 times when travelling back from work today (around 20 miles).

Weather was great (no rain - so no obvious electrical problems), and it only happened at idle or just off idle. Tickover is set at c.1150 revs, carbs feel OK, plug caps look fine, sidestand is like new. Bike is an '02 plate with 6k miles.

The bike pulls like a train with no missing and is great at medium and high speeds.

Is this a common problem; has anyone had anything similar?

It's all a big joke until you have somebody's eye out...

Mine has been Dynojetted, but I get a similar problem. Will idle fine when warm but will sometimes cut out when opening the throttle from idle. If your gentle for the first 500 revs it's fine, but if you give it a handful quickly then it'll sometimes cough & stall.
I've got used to it & will hold a few extra revs when crawling in traffic or when preparing to pull off at junctions etc.

Might be able to cure it by getting your carbs balanced, no big deal though so could just learn to ride round it like I have done.

mmm my storm used to do exactly the same ,,, ive got twin high level scorpion cans on her , theyve never been set up to the bike . At tickover she would cut out on me , revs where round the 11k mark so all i did was turn the wee knob till she sat at 12.500 , hey presto no more cutting out ,

she getting set up properly now , as got the death rattle :o(

I hope you mean it was at 1100 not 11k & you've set tickover at 1250 not 12,500 or it's no wonder you've got a rattle !

Never had the problem, but my tickover is just over 1200 rpm
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!
