New owners asks multiple questions.

Post by Beamish »

Hello all,
New to me 2000 red (the best colour) Storm 10500miles, FSH.
1. 1st to 2nd gear is it usually that clunky on a bike of that age, and are there any cures?
2. CCTs how much will Honda charge for fitting replacements at 12000mile service?
3. Are there any reccommended lower fairing/belly pan manufacturers?
4. About to put Scorpion cans on, will a carb/rejet be required?

Sorry about all the questions but I have cruised the site (not stalked 8O )for a week trying to get these answers. I have come close but no definitives. Thanks in advance for any info.
P.S I love this bike, not going back to a four ever.

1st to 2nd!!!
They all do that sir!!

Things that might help you.
Check the chain tension. A loose chain makes it seam worse.
Adjust the gear lever. Moving the lever down 10 to 20 mm will give you a more positive up change reducing the chances of false neutrals.

Hope this helps

Welcome to VTR ownership and the site! :D

1) They clunk from new with the thought that it'll get better as it all settles down. It doesn't! I find that high revs make it worse so change into second pretty quickly. Cush drive wear in the rear hub can create a problem as well as the chain adjustment. If the chain and adjustment is good and bike is on a rear paddock stand, put it into first gear (not with eng running!!!). Rock the rear wheel about to see if you can 'feel' wear. What actually happens is the rubber segments inside get compressed by the power pulses of the big V twin. This results in a sloppy fit and Bingo. Problem. This fault starts to show normally at about 10,000 miles ish so yours in bang on for that. You can either fit new ones or shim the old ones with plastic from an ice cream container cut to size!

2) CCT's to change? About 120ukp at a guess from a shop (did my own).

3) Personal choice. I bought one. Didn't like it so eBayed it and I also went with a colour coded std Honda one instead that was bought off of eBay for a fiver & sprayed up so ????

4) I had Scorpian cans on my first VTR with two sets of baffles. One set dead std. One set with the perforations and end plate section cut off and the remaining tube effectively just reducing the outlet size and of course the choice to run none at all!!! 8O

The 1st to 2nd change is clunky on most bikes, it's because there is a huge change in ratio between the two gears, about 30% in fact. The ratios get closer and closer as you go through the gears, by the time you go from 5 to 6 the ratio change may only be 5%.

Also the bike has far less momentum at low speed so it slows relatively quickly as you roll off and pull the clutch (if you use it).

I've never owned a bike that did not exihibit this characteristic

Thanks Goffy sounds like an answer I can live with.
