After many weeks, have finally managed to get back to fixing the bike after CCT disaster.Valve timing reset, engine now turns over OK, put it all back together but won't start. Starter motor turns it over OK but no sign of it firing up.
When I took it apart again to see if I had put it back together incorrectly, no sign of fuel in pipes from tap so worried I had put breather pipe on incorrectly. I have checked tap by putting another pipe on and sucking to create vacuum and petrol flows OK.
Any ideas anyone? Having been without a functioning bike for the best part of the summer, I'm now desperate to get it going before the weather turns.
Bike won't start
There are three pipes, one for each carb and the vacuum pipe. This does not connect to the bottom bit of the fuel tap, so check its on the right connection. Also, if you have created a vacuum with another piece of pipe is the vacuum hose kinked/nicked/holed?
Have you turned the fuel tap back on? I know it sounds a bit obvious, but its back to basics sometimes. If you have created a vacuum with a separate piece of pipe you would think that the float chambers would have filled - but if it has been standing a long while the evaporated fuel could have gummed up the carbs.
If there is no fuel in the pipes the presumably there is none in the carbs either. You could try rigging up a fuel supply from a small container to the carbs and see if it starts then - if so, its fuel tap related.

Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Stratman,
Thanks for the suggestions. As I still had the tank in place, you gave me the idea of simply taking off the vacuum pipe and fitting another pipe which I sucked on while startiing the engine. It worked and she started almost immediately.
However it sounds awful with a tapping sound coming from the rear cylinder. My guess is that either the valve timing isn't spot on or one of the rear exhaust valves is bent as feared.
Looks like it will all have to come apart again.
