Job Difficulty

Post by Dazjm »

Hi
Lookin to do some DIY on my bike, and being new to most of it, im trying to work out what i should attempt, and what i should paythrough the nose for!

So on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being most difficult, could u rate these jobs for me! Ive already done one, so i could maybe work it from there.

1) Change brake pads, both wheels
2) Clean/overhaul calipers, both wheels
3) Fit renntec grab rail to sub frame
4) Fit after market exhausts
5) Replace Exhaust down pipes
6) Replace rear shock
7) Replace Fork Dust seals
8) Replace Wheel bearings

i know this might seem daft, but i dont wanna start something i cant finish.
Im pretty confident, good with mah hands and technically minded, willing to give most sh1t a bash, cheers

Yeah but you were a little more helpful than I was Mike.
I thought about adding if you've got a centre paddock stand it's a doddle
but that would have been too many words to write

The ratings obviously gonna depend on your ability, so I'll rate them for me (I can do a 2 spanner rated Haynes job and some of the threes, but tend to leave anything trickier alone. I also believe in always having brakes done professionally as the consequences of not getting it right are too big)

So:

1) Change brake pads, both wheels - 4 (fairly simple, but time consuming to do properly, but I don't do my own, though I have in the past)
2) Clean/overhaul calipers, both wheels (I'd do this same time as number 1)
3) Fit renntec grab rail to sub frame - 2-9 depending on if you have the correct fitting bits, otherwise its fabricating time, which I wholeheartedly suck at.)
4) Fit after market exhausts - 3
5) Replace Exhaust down pipes - 5 purely for the header nuts tightness and ease of stripping / cross threading. Cannot be rushed.
6) Replace rear shock - 3-4 easy with a helper or an Alan :)
7) Replace Fork Dust seals - never done it, but I'd try it, so it gets a 4.
Cool Replace Wheel bearings - tricky one, can be easy, can be impossible. They're a VERY tight fit and without a bearing press can be a bitch. The old blowtorch and freezer technique should make it a 5-6 job. Never done FireStorm ones.

1) Change brake pads, both wheels: 3. only a problem if the pistons are knackered and scrape the seals as you push em back in. Give them a quick clean with a toothbrush (use the wife's :D ) and brake cleaner first.

2) Clean/overhaul calipers, both wheels: 4

3) Fit renntec grab rail to sub frame: 2

4) Fit after market exhausts: 2 (for slip-ons)

5) Replace Exhaust down pipes: 3 (could be a 10 if the header bolts are correded and snap in the head :( )

6) Replace rear shock: 3

7) Replace Fork Dust seals:6

8) Replace Wheel bearings : 4

dont use heat or anything on bearings for christs sakes

drift the bearings out

and re fitting them use a socket that is slightly less than the o/d of the bearing and drift them in
