Random noises, worth worrying?

Post by Dazjm »

Was playing with my new abba stand(amazing piece of kit), had the engine ticking over, cos i thought i had heard a constant ticking when i was on it last.

Well, there was a ticking/tapping noise, coming from what seemed front left portion of engine. From readin the forum, i thought might be CCT. Cut off engine, left it 2 mins , started again, and noise was gone. Repeated this a couple of times, and the noise came and went randomly :? should i worry?

Also there seemed to be a quieter, knocking/tapping noise coming from a more central area of engine, is this anything to worry about?
:(

Sorry for what might seem pointless worry, just wanna make sure i havent bought a binner :(

p.s is it safe or not advisable to have the bike in gear and running it on the stand? tried it very briefly and the chain seemed to be rattlin a lot.

All bikes have there very own different engine noises. As in a four cylinder engine will sound very different to a V twin as far as engine noises go. If you could hear another Firestorm to compare, that might be a good idea, or get somebody who you can trust in the motorcycle business to have a listen. You're probably worrying over nothing, but best to get it checked over, if only for peace of mind.

I wouldn't recommend running your bike in gear more than necessary while up on any stand :!: Think what would happen if the stand did break or the bike just fell off it with the back wheel doing 70mph or more :!:

I had that ticking then it went after a restart, only to reappear and then go etc. I had just fitted new CCT's and wasn't a happy camper. Removed the rear one as that appeared to be the culprit and fitted yet another new one. Problem gone away now so 'know' that I was right to change it. Suggest for the small outlay now you change the front (in-the-middle-of-the-'V') CCT as that one suffers the most due to lack of lubrication and heat build up. Better safe than out of pocket big time if it goes!!!!!
Good Luck!
