Loose brake pads

Post by Dazjm »

Lo, changed my pads recently , front and rear.

Have been hearing a gentle clunk coming from front wheel ever since, sourced the noise to the brake pads.

In both calipers, i can move the pads with my finger (brake off obviously) they travel about 5mm up and down.

Should they be moving at all? or should they be stuck in place?

Bike seems to brake ok, just very annoying clunking noise!

is that 5mm of movement in the direction of rotation or 5mm up and down in the calliper, ie away from the centre of the wheel?

Do you have the little silver spring plates fitted that keep light pressure on the top of the pads?

Yea, its 5mm away from middle of the wheel. Well actually they kinda rock, i.e. if i push on one end of the pad it goes up at that end, and down on the other.

Yea, ive got little metal spring plates fixed to the top, are they sposed to be exerting pressure onto the pads? if so, i dont think they are!

1 thing i will add. My calipers are not the same as those in the VTR manual. Mine are black and i think it says "Tokico" on them. Not the gold Nissin ones. Im guessing they were changed by previous owners.

The pads i bought from Wemoto however were for a 99 Firestorm. Are the calipers i have now, from a different bike? or should the pads fit fine with no "shoogling" and clunking issues.

Ta for the help, 1st time bike owner 3 weeks now and counting!

Yep they should be exerting light pressure on the pads, however I suspect someone has *aherm "upgraded" the callipers, they sound like they could be off a gixxer.

Q1. Does it stop?
A1. Yes

Then they are OK

My TDM pads rattle like buggery. Only noticed when I moved the bike without wearing earplugs. Some do, some don't!
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Looks like your brakes have been improved over standard.

See the bit, the calipers bolt too, the fork slider i think its called?

How do i restore them? They seem to be , not rusting , but de-laquering?

Daz, they deffo look like GSXR jobbies, im sure somebody will be along soon to confirm!

As for the fork stanchions, i think the only real way to sort them would be to re-spray them either professionally or yourself!
