The Annual...Please Help Squiffy Thread..

Post by Squiffythewombat »

Hi Guys,

Forgive the long post, many questions:

1) Does anybody know where i can get a 43 tooth renthal rear sprocket where i dont have to wait 3 weeks for delivery?

2) Anybody got any ideas as to how i can remove my back wheel without any form of stands? Would breeze blocks under the swinging arm be ok do you think? I need the front out as well and have no beams to use this year and the car jacks the wrong type!

3) Rear subframe has rusty patches i need to paint, dont have the time to spray the whole thing black so can anybody recommend a good sliver paint? Hammerite maybe?

4) Rear wheel bearings? wheres cheap to get these from, i dont mind non-honda parts, everywhere seems really expensive!

5) Anybody got a left hand radiator grill cover thing they want to sell me?

6) Cleaning calipers, there seems to be lots of ground in brake dust and grime. Ive tried WD40 and gunk and petrol to no avail? I don't want to wire brush for fear of ruining the finish!

7) Red touch up pens, cant seem to find these in the correct red either?

8 ) The paint on my wheels is beginning to flake off and look old, does anybody know the correct colour and again can you link me to some touch up pens by chance? (the weird black/grey/graphite colour)

9) Why cant i pull a nice young blonde sweedish girl in canterbury?

10) I dont have a torque wrench, the sprocket nuts apparently have to be tightened to something silly like 108n, should i a)buy a wrench and set back the bike a week due to cost or b)just tighten them as much as humanly possible with my normal wrench?

Thanks for reading!

Squiify, get yourself one of these

Perfect for rear wheel nuts, steering stem nuts etc... Seems pretty accurate as well (I tested it against my Halfords wrench and it was bang-on). A bargain at £15

What you need is what they "dig"...... a natural volcanic hot spring in your back garden....not a lot of them in canterbury i would imagine....but i am sure there are plenty of very cold bits of water there and maybe some snow soon....perfect for pulling eskimo's
Keep it gutter...Keep it grimey..........one!

Steve from paddockstand.

Lurker on this site, in the member list so give him a shout
2) Anybody got any ideas as to how i can remove my back wheel without any form of stands? Would breeze blocks under the swinging arm be ok do you think? I need the front out as well and have no beams to use this year and the car jacks the wrong type!
You could use what the motocross boys use
A stount stick under the right side of the swingarm
Combined with the sidestand it will get the wheel up easy enough
Mind you its not particularly stable so you'd wanna loosen the spindle first
When you are speaking to Steve why dont you get him to price you up a rear stand?
3) Rear subframe has rusty patches i need to paint, dont have the time to spray the whole thing black so can anybody recommend a good sliver paint? Hammerite maybe?
Smoothrite would do fine. Make sure you give the frame a good sand so its got a decent surface to adhere to
4) Rear wheel bearings? wheres cheap to get these from, i dont mind non-honda parts, everywhere seems really expensive!
Wemoto
See here for more info

5) Anybody got a left hand radiator grill cover thing they want to sell me?
Sorry, no. Could you make one from some mesh? Available from B&Q, cheap as chips, looks smart when done properly
Yellafella did it a while ago, while the pics have disappeared the instructions are still useful
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB2/viewtopic ... light=mesh
6) Cleaning calipers, there seems to be lots of ground in brake dust and grime. Ive tried WD40 and gunk and petrol to no avail? I don't want to wire brush for fear of ruining the finish!
Green scourer and some halfrauds brake cleaner
7) Red touch up pens, cant seem to find these in the correct red either?
Why would you want red? Try using black instead.
8 ) The paint on my wheels is beginning to flake off and look old, does anybody know the correct colour and again can you link me to some touch up pens by chance? (the weird black/grey/graphite colour)
If its the edges, use some rim tape to hide it
Otherwise, use a black permanent marker to make them less obvious
9) Why cant i pull a nice young blonde sweedish girl in canterbury?
Facebook?
10) I dont have a torque wrench, the sprocket nuts apparently have to be tightened to something silly like 108n, should i a)buy a wrench and set back the bike a week due to cost or b)just tighten them as much as humanly possible with my normal wrench?
a)

Ben Thanks for the input.

I have steve on MSN, already spoken to him :-)

If its ok, i will be inheriting FSM's old stand which will solve lots of problems, but i like your pole idea, cheap and i could do that this weekend with some mates (student labours dirt cheap...4 X fosters :D )

calipers - Ive been using a green scourer on them already and in very small areas i can see its going through the gold paint to silver? :? tried pretty much every cleaning product on the market now...they are clean but not clean enough lol!

Have found some silver humbrol enamel so thats great :-) Already sanded and prepped area!

Kitch Thanks man but i cant afford an entire new rad, its literally just the grill that sits over it i need, mines all rusty :-(

Chicken wire's cheap.

Or some plaster board mesh. Easy peasy.

http://www.meshdirect.co.uk/ <-- email them and see if they'll sell you a roll end of offcut. Or 6mm chicken wire is £8.99 for a meter.

i thought of that, but on reflection though it would look a bit odd! i guess i could just paint the grill, but i cant see it giving a good finnish! :?

Squiffy
May be able to get you some stainless/steel perforated mesh m8 think we’ve got 3 types at work at moment one with 6mm round holes one with 10mm round holes and some 10mm square welded mesh bit like shopping trolley sided but the holes are 10mm square thickness of the stuff is 16s gauge or 1.6mm depending on how old you are
I can cut them as blanks and you sort the fitting IE cut as a pair of rectangles to size
Ps
look out for them pyramid bearings too I have a 20 year old VFR that im restoring just had the wheels blasted and painted so needed new bearings back and front
Fitted them in it the wheels then took it for its MOT it failed on having to much play in the wheel bearings
Try BSL in your local tell book take your old ones with you and ask them how much for replacements

Perf mesh http://actis.nelweb.biz/perforatedsheets.htm
