another regulator question!!

Post by yorkylancs »

Can anybody tell me,if the later "finned"R+R say 2001 onwards fits the 97 model.Mines the one without fins, and has fried itself, seen one on ebay from a 97 model, and that has fins! I imagine this is an aftermarket one. Iknow of the R1/R6 mod,but just want something i can plug in straight away, cheers :D

I think you will find many will fit from a number of manufacturers. Most of the 5 wire ones will be a straight change over, you may just need to drill another mounting hole and replace the plug and terminals. If it's a 6 wire one you will most likely need to do the same, but add the 6th wire to ignition power. A good spot is just under the fuse box at the ignition fuse outside. Wire colours in general are, yellow for the 3 stator wires, red for battery positive, black for earth (if used), and brown for the battery reference voltage (ignition). Now those wires are a general guide, some manufacturers will be different. Most these days adopt the yellow stator wires though.

My VTR is currently running a RD350LC Yamaha reg/rec that I fitted out of curiosity (I have a workshop full of RD RZ bits). It's been a few week now and it has performed flawlessly. They also have a decent sized finned heat sink.
Cheers

I bought one from Electrex World - straight swap (but finned etc) and no messing around with extraneous wires!
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Thanks all, will put a bid on one,its probably worth storing them in the cupboard, considering the regularatory they go pop at!!All i have to wait for now is the starter motor to come back from re-con,how is it that you cant buy indivudual parts for them, yet the people fixing them can?Only needed the brush plate insulating ring, but the only thing you could buy is the bolt assembly.A word on the starter cable, its a nightmare and seems to be a real weak link, mine let me down big time ,at the bottom of snake pass(4 in the morning one of them early morning summer rides!!!)since then have joined the AA!Its a shame had the bike 6 months, really enjoyed it(first v twin)done 10,000 miles on it without any other probs, however still waiting for the biggy ,the death rattle from the cam-chain,lots of good pointers on here though,hey-ho if it happens it happens!!any other major ones anybody knows of?Cheers all Rick. :D
