Went round bob the builders gaff tday.

Took his starter off his bike (after much wrestling with the bolt) with the intention of testing out the 2 i have, as well as the starter solenoid.

Both my starters worked , as did the starter solenoid!
If they work out of the bike and not in the bike using all your original wiring I would sugest you look at the clutch mechanism which engages the starter motor to the engine. If it is seizing intermittantly or siezed it may be stalling the starter moter.
Another thing you could try is removing the spark plugs (which will remove the load on the starter moter and see if it will turn over then. If it does I would definitly look at the starter mechanics.

When you tried the starter motor with the jump leads (as above) after removing it from the bike, did you remove the heavy cable going to it
Yea, i basically had the starter sitting on the deck, with the cable disconnected. Connected up jump lead from neg on battery to motor case, and connected the other lead to the posi term on batt, and touched the bolt on the front of the starter.. i got an almighty spark, with some bolt meltage. The batt was d/c from the bike completly. Imo the motor should have started up, but i dunno. Took em to Bobs and they both work wombles spot on.........

Its honestly driving me up the wall. There must be something in the fact that it started the motor when i bounced about on the bike. Like a loose / corroded connection somewhere, somethin to that effect. Its intermittent, but moreso on the side of not workin.
If they both worked spot on at Bob's then I can't see why they didn't work when you tried them with the jump leads, with the s/motor not fitted to the bike. Are you sure you had the jump leads connected the right way around to the starter motor :?: What type of charger did you use when you charged the battery, as I was wondering if there was any chance you could have charged it up in reversed polarity :?:

I'd try a different battery using the jump leads to the starter motor while it's not fitted to the bike :!:

That sounds like shorted windings. It could be cause by muck across the stater or a winding itself braking down. Did it do it on both moters? You could try rotating the moter by hand and powering it at different positions. You might find that you have some dead spots where it doesn't move and other places where it turns as normal.

Dont wanna tempt fate, but i think i got it fixed :? :?

Was confused at how my bits worked on bobs bike, was convinced i musta had a dodgy connection somewhere, especially if jumping up and down was starting it, so i traced the cable coming from the neg terminal on battery to the starter sensor, where its bolted onto the frame....

From my recent trouble with the speed sensor, i had obvioulsy left the bolt finger tight.. so it was slightly loose.

Im hoping on tightening this connection, that the fault was i wasnt getting a good earth connection, hence making the load for the starter solenoid even bigger.

We can only wait and see.. But it started 1st time after sitting outside for a few days

Thanks everyone for the help. This forum is a godsend.

And thank god bob lives across a field from me.

Yea, no sh1t.

Took a scoot over to Bobs, show him what all the fuss was about.

Well as i was leaving and about to turn sharp right out of his drive down a hill, did i not just stall the mofo, and drop it!! noooo...

First drop, well it was more of a controlled put down, no real damage thankfully, but what a sh1t end to an otherwise sh1t week

On an even shitter note, both me and bob reckon my bikes needs the front CCT changed, as its rattly.

WOOP TE DOO........ so expect more frantic posting about jumping cam chains, bent valves and the like!!!

wish me luck

Did the R6 rectifier upgrade tho, which went swimingly, looks nice, and more importantly isnt cooking my battery now.

But of course i wasnt allowed some good news without something bad happening, so in turn ive burned my right hand on the exhaust headers, and now its wombles painful!

Daz, I got Hazel to sweep up the loose chips from the drive where you had your wee trip today( well, she wasn't going to help me roughcast anyway!) so it's a wee bit safer now.
Jokin' apart bring up the bike if you want a hand to replace CCT's and leave it here whilst completing the job, told me mate tonight to get the Norton back to his own gaff so more room now available.
:D
