Sprocket Upgrade (another sprocket question)
Sprocket Upgrade (another sprocket question)
sorry to post about this again but i have read nearly all the sprocket threads and my brain has gone to mush.
i'm going to change my sprockets in the next few days so i'm wondering
do i keep the std setup 16-41
or and this where i got a little lost
i've read that 15-43 is a popular set up but increases chain wear
is 16-44 a similer set up or am i out by miles.
also if i go for the 15-43 how far out will my speedo be out don't want to pick up any tickets just yet and to skint to by a speedo healer.
cheers matthew

ive run 15/41, 15/42, 15/43, 16/42 and 16/43
Im my opinion 16/43 is the best, its not silly with lifting the front but will easily do it on the power up to about 3rd. Chain wear should be pretty normal on this setup! (if you got higher than 43 on the rear chances are you will need a new chain)
The speedo will over read so if anything you will think ur going faster than you actually are! (think mine over reads about 10% but cant really be sure)
what i am sure of is that somebody more knowledgable than me will come along shortly and give you the correct advice!
Happy Riding

I think you'll find the std speedo is out by about 9% to start with. Dreadful.

I have to say that the Speedo Healer was a damn good investment and you know that whatever changes are made (due to sprocket changes or tyre choices) then you'll have a speedo that reads 'bang-on' if used with a sat nav for initial set-up.

I run 15/41 and find chain wear isnt much different. As a big twin, it can eat chains anyway, so I always make sure I run good quality ones and keep an eye on them and adjust them as soon as they need doing. Makes enough of a difference to be worth it. I prefer it for higher gears' incresed pull (6th gear is much more useable) and find I basically run 1 gear higher then standard at the same revs / speed.
I have a speedo healer and with stock error plus smaller sprockets, its out by 12%
Cant recommend them enough really, yeah they're kinda expensive, but they really are a brilliant bit of kit. True speed and no putting extra miles on your odomoeter by under reading. (on the Mugello trip, the non speedo healer bikes were showing 95 miles and mine was showing 85 at fill up time) That was 200 extra miles by the end of the trip and an extra 1200 miles a year if you ride as much as I do.

16/43 + 15/41 will be pretty similar. 15/43 is about as low as I'd take it. If you go for 16/43 you can see how it feels and add a 15 front if you think it needs more.genisis wrote:So 16/43 should be a good setup.
for more acceleration than top speed.
I'm i right in thinking that it might be worth buying a couple of diffrent and just experimenting with it?
will that stop the constant flicking between 1st and 2nd in town?
Thanks
Matthew
As for town, I pretty much never use 1st gear except pulling away. 2nd with a rare bit of clutch slip as needed.

quite possibly chris, only thing is i swap engines more than you change underpants so whatever the clocks read doesnt really matter :-) great idea tho getting a healer if you want it to be bang on !LotusSevenMan wrote:Squiff.

Not cheap, but incredible to get such accuracy from your speedo.
On a closed private circuit (!) 100mph indicated on the adjusted speedo was an actual 100.2 on the sat nav. Brilliant.
The top speed recall is rather good too. Neat to push the button in the car park and see the speedo flick to the highest registered speed on your last outing and then it goes back to zero!!!

Cupasoop.
Credit a fellow VTR with a bit of the common eh?
That button is not dash mounted, but somewhere that is easy to get to but unless you know............................. you won't know!!!!!!

By the way, the std (cheaper) unit has the recall button on top of the little unit itself. It means removing the seat to check. The remote flylead is an option. I was lucky as when I ordered mine they were out of the less expensive option so asked if I wouldn't mind having the top-of-the-shop version for the same price. Hmmm; no contest!
I also bought the prewired 'Honda' lead which gives a real quick, tidy installation.
Downside of owning one is that if you have an Acumen type digital gear indicator fitted you'll need to reset it once the speedo healer is fitted as it upsets the system. No big deal. Just be aware of the fact. I wasn't and my six speed bike turned into a five speed one if you get my drift. A quick reset on the paddock stand and all was well.
