Clatter, clatter, game over?

Post by Norton500 »

Hi all, just stuck in new Denso Iridiums (0.4mm's), K&N filter and an R1 regulator, and having had a bitch of a job getting the tank off and on again (pipework bloody everwhere), we gave it a chance to fire up.

As the bike had been stuck in the garage for a couple of weeks with the alarm on and without the Optimate fitted, and we hadn't bled the fuel, I half-heartedly gave it a few blasts on the starter. The bike didn't start before the battery was getting tired - as expected really.

As I was getting near giving up and the starter turned slower and slower, there was a funny noise best described as an 'electrical clattering' noise. We traced it to the starter solenoid.

Does anyone know whether this is common when trying to kick over a Firestorm with a failing battery or is this game over for the solenoid?
It's all a big joke until you have somebody's eye out...

Cars do it when the battery is flat, so I see no reason why a bike starter would be any different, get some juice into the battery and retry it.

Fully charge the battery and the noise should have disappeared :!:
