Bike Rental in USA - Route 66

Post by welshy »

I was wondering if any of the American's on the Forum (or anyone for that matter) can help me out with some info. Me and my brother are planning to ride route 66 from Chicago to LA next summer. I have found some companies offering gudied/self guide tours and rentals but we are looking to just rent the bike and head off and do our own thing. Can you recommend any books/guides/maps to help us get the most out of our 2 weeks? Also any rental companies that you can recommend. It's got to be a Harley 1400+ CC machine (bit different to the Storm I know). Planning to go around July time. Cheers chaps.

If I were you, I would skip the rest of the country, and just stay in California. Check out this site on the roads we have here.

Spent 3 weeks travelling round California and Nevada this year albeit in a car. Santa Monica....Wow. I want to live there!

Still pricing up flights/rental etc, but we might just be doing California again. Where about are you?

I took Rt66 from just north of Oklahoma City to Tulsa around July/August last year...errr about uhhh maybe 60-70 miles or so. Not much out there. Farms and few gas stations. Not sure on trips/deals for the whole Coast to lake deal either...

Ended up taking the highway back due to high heat and slower roadspeeds on 66. Sweat me butt oooof!! Haha. Had to clip a bottle of water to my belt and pull over every 25 miles to keep from dehydrating!! SCARY HOT! Probably around 96-98F?!? :? and nasty humidity... Friend of mine was pushing 85mph in his Karmann Ghia! :!: :!: :!:

If you're gonna roll through the middle flatland bring plenty of gasoline and water!
