alarm immobilisers

Hello folks, just joined, just got a storm, luvn it so far and got a wee list of things to do, high level or even better under seat cans ?? (where do you get them ) , gear indicator, new sprockets chain, respray / repair bellypan, flush indicators front and arrow ones rear....
.... anyway the thread .. I do see sopme pretty good value alarm / immob / gadget / remote start type security systems on ebay and other sites..
Anybody got any advice / experience of these sort of systems .. Im bit wary of getn stranded with these sort of things not working, but the remote engine starts gotta be a bit of fun (if your a gadget fan like me ) !!

Any thoughts ..

Underseat cans......make them yourself

Unless it's an approved alarm for insurance purposes, I wouldn't bother. Cheap alarms probably only get shaken to bits and let you down by the side of the road somewhere.

My first storm had a thatcham approved spyball. This storm has nothing. The spyball was good but I didn't see the point. As proved in MCN when an alarm goes off everyone ignores it. I've done a couple of bike recoveries for the bike shop I used to teach for. I just loaded the bikes into the van with the alarms going off an no one took a blind bit of notice.

When i got this storm the insurance said I'd get 10 or 15% off if I get a thatcham alarm.

A good alarm immobiliser cost about Â£300 fitted. I was going to save about Â£20 a year on my insurance. I would have had to own the bike for 15 year before having an alarm started saving me money.

I will say that my bike is garaged when I'm not using it!

Hi Geordie, the Datatool Evo alarm seems like a good system had it on both my bikes, just one word of warning......buy a battery optimiser as they do tend to kill batteries.

welcome mate.
think im with everyone else here.
unless its makeing a big difference in your ins ,dont bother,no one pays any notice to them anyway.
i had a top of the range datatool on my storm when i got her,and within 4 months id killed it with all the vibrating the bike made.
i tried padding it out ,cushioning but nothing...i think the power of the storm was to much

plus it killed the battery within a week if i didnt plug in the optimate.
i think for the same ins discount datatag or smartwater might be another route to think about????

as for remote starts....i thought about one a few yrs ago .for my car and bike .......until a mate of mine came round in his VERY flash escort soft top.
yes he left it in gear ...bag straight into the car in front...ooops
now i dont know weather the new systems prevent starting whilst your vechile is in gear???id like to think so ,if so it might be fun.

it is i believe illeagal to fit remote start on a manual car,and your insurance wont pay out if they found out

Hi there,

i'd agree with the alarm coments so far, if you fit one you will need an optimiser to keep the battery topped up, they are more for piece of mind, a determined thief will take the bike anyway, but if its at your house you might be able to do something about it if you hear the alarm going. Datatag and smartwater will help also, make sure you mark it in some obvious places where the numbers can be seen, then they won't know how many other numbers you can't see and maybe not take the bike for parts.

you can run by cuppa's house and make him jealous with the noise as he's not got his storm anymore....

Hi. I had a Meta351 on mine which was fine (save for having to keep the bike on Optimate) but it packed up last summer and I couldn't start the bike (or go to Wales on it to play) so I removed it completely. I suppose it depends where you live and where you keep the bike, but I wouldn't bother personally.

Yup don't bother with an immobiliser - I (luckily) had mine immobilise itself at the dealer whilst it was in for a service, much to the confusion of the mechanics when I went to pick it up - snip snip and I was on my way. A honda D lock which is designed to fit under the seat takes care of security.

You might want to consider, if it still has an original screen, getting a flip screen or double bubble. For me of average height 5' 10" it eliminates helmet buffeting at 80mph+ jaunts.

Pipes, loud pipes are a must. Soon you'll be playing all kinds of tunes om 'em!

FWIW Wicky I don't rate double bubble screens if you are doing a reasonable distance (not just a flip around the block) as the lower screen means at speed the wind pressure on my chest supports my body better and I get less wrist ache (OY. Less of that

Tried both screens and am back to the std type screen albeit a fully dark tinted copy

After my test ride the skidmarx flip-up was the first thing I bought

Never had a problem with the wrists, despite having broken both! Probably stronger than before

Plus I ride everyday and flourish a cricket bat when the sun is high in the sky.

In the search for a screen pic stumbled across this yank custard Superhawk http://barrysuperhawk.home.insightbb.com/ with the flipiest screen I've ever seen, and equipped with the obligatory gun rack and ammo case mod...
