need a favour
Can I ask a favour of some one I need the standard ride height for the back of the storm?
When I got the bike it had a standard damper with a Maxton spring on the back and what I think is hargon springs in the front forks
The front yokes had been dropped a fair way with more than 30mm of fork showing above the clip-on
Now I’ve changed my forks with Race Tech valves and springs and moved them back to the standard height
But a thought has crossed my mind that the spring may have been for a short butt (apologies to the vertically challenged) hence the yokes being dropped so far so I need a height for the back to check it
I measured from the top of the chain adjuster bolt to the centre of the panel pin on the under side of the seat unit with the bike at rest on its wheels and upright
If any one’s in the garage with a tape the measurement would be appreciated

I'd set it so that whatever spring is on it gives you correct static sag for your weight.
Once the preload is set, you can see how it feels turning in and raise the ride height with a shim or spacer if you need to.
That way, regardless of what it should be, it'll be set for your weight and how you want it to feel. Better all round, surely?
(Greg's setup guide is good stuff: Clicky)
The measurement you've taken sounds to me like it wouldnt help as my standard shock with my preload is going to be different than the measurement for your spring and your preload.
(and, its gonna be more different when I pick my bike up with its lovely Penske on tomorrow *proud*

I need the figure to make sure the geometry’s some were near right kitch otherwise I’ll roll in to the first corner and find im riding a bloody chopper and I’ll be off in to the scenery
The suspension settings come later
If it is a short spring it’ll bugger the geometry up and I have no comparison to check against

Tell me about it !

Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Re: need a favour
I have a Maxton spring (purple in colour) on my standard rear shock that I fitted myself. The spring is fitted with a black collar. Providing the Maxton spring is still under tension when you lift the rear of the bike (not the back wheel) to fully extend the shock travel, then I would say that the ride height is standard providing you definitely still have the standard Showa shock (damper as you called it) fitted. Also that no spacer has been fitted between the top of the shock and the frame.warby221 wrote: When I got the bike it had a standard damper with a Maxton spring on the back

I found with my Maxton spring fitted the rear of the bike is already as high as it will go and therefore I can't get the desired 8mm static sag. I am going to remove the spring at sometime, reduce the black collar then re-fit to see if I can get somewhere near that desired static sag.
The only way the rear ride height can be altered with the shock itself is with a shock that has a length adjuster built in, which the standard VTR one doesn't. Or an after market specially built shock for the vertically challenged, that will be built shorter in the first place.
HTH,
Chris.
PS. I'd be interested to know the height of your black collar and if your bike like mine, is at the top of it's travel on the rear shock when standing up right.

Re: need a favour
Thanks for the measurement timbo I’ve got a datum to work from now
No black collar on my shock m8 just the spring can’t tell yer if it’s at full stretch as swing arms off for a good cleaning at the momentsirch345 wrote:I have a Maxton spring (purple in colour) on my standard rear shock that I fitted myself. The spring is fitted with a black collar. .
Re: need a favour
The Maxton spring is the same diameter from end to end, that's why they use a reducing collar. The standard spring doesn't need a reducing collar because it is reduced at one end to fit the shock.warby221 wrote:No black collar on my shock m8 just the spring can’t tell yer if it’s at full stretch as swing arms off for a good cleaning at the momentsirch345 wrote:I have a Maxton spring (purple in colour) on my standard rear shock that I fitted myself. Here's a pic of my Maxton spring, you can also see the black collar:-

did you go into your garage and whip your cans off just to take that picture?sirch345 wrote:Here's a pic of my Maxton spring, you can also see the black collar:-
Man, that's hardcore.

No plastic ring on it and almost sure it’s a Maxton spring
Looking a bit worse for wear at the moment but it still has a part number on it
Mind you I’ve no way of knowing how old it is they may have changed them since
It’s the amount of fork showing that had me wondering there was over 30mm past the clip-on
Even roger was surprised that it handled ok that way
