Bored this afternoon, so i did this!

Used to look like this

Now looks like this

Took me about an hour and a half, and much swearing......

I have been looking for a decent short Yoshimura can for ages but they all seem to go for nearly £400 8O . So i did some digging about and found some articles saying how to do it. I threw them away and went my own way! It's a little bit louder but not much but i like the look. The can was only £50 anyway so i didn't have much to lose.

Drilled out the rivets.
Chopped the can in half.
Pushed out the spout end.
"Coaxed" it into the half.
Rivetted it all together.
Drilled out the badge rivets.
Re-drilled holes in the used half.
Rivetted the badge et voila!

Sounds so simple when i write it down but there are lots of pitfalls along the way. The wadding stuff in the can is really nasty and itchy so wear gloves. Take out the drilled rivets, mine are still in there  . Make pilot holes for your new holes to stop you sliding off your aim  .

All in all an afternoon well spent while it pours with rain outside!

Much nicer IMHO.
Also distracts ones eye from the fact it ain't a FireStorm ha ha
No, really that is a great job. Looks more like an original fitment to be honest.

Just out of interest do you prefer your silver beast to the std blue/white GSXR's? Silly question as I guess you'd have to say 'Yes'.

Interesting you should say that. I have seen many others around, nearly all of which are blue/white or red/black. The others are all black. I got this one as a grey import from Taz Motorcycles in Peterborough. It is in the Phantom colours that was a limited edition in the UK but is a standard colour for some other country. It is very stealthy and doesn't draw a lot of attention like the SP1 did. I must say that i like it more and more every day and it blends in nicely with my riding style.

Mellis as Sir Charles Lytton??????

The Return Of The Pink Panther DVD : Read reviews and compare ...The prime suspect is the smoothly aristocratic jewel thief Sir Charles Lytton (Christopher Plummer), aka the Phantom.

You always come up with your amazing trivia knowledge mate!!

Timbo, i cut it with an HSS blade on a full size hacksaw. Get a piece of A4 and tear it in half. Stick two ends together and you will have a stright line. Wrap it around the can so that teh ends meet and you then have a perfect line. Saw down the line carefully, i was quite lucky when i did it as i got it nearly right. Once i had gone through the whole thing the cuts didn't quite meet but i got them to after a little extra cut. I then filed down the end so that it was true and straight, although it doesn't matter too much as on a Yoshi the end is mostly covered by a piece of metal strap.

It isn't that loud either. It isn't quiet but around town it just sounds grunty rather than the thumping twin bass sound.

Tell him to check out he Gixerjunkies website or gixxer.com. There are lots of tutorials on there. That said, if he wants a more detailed list of instructions then get me on here and i will give him the details.

Mark,

I think I'm right in saying stainless steel are best and is more than likely what was used originally.

I imagine the reason or one anyway, is that a stainless steel pop rivet is stronger than an alloy one, so they will compress a lot tighter than alloy ones. That will mean less chance for the exhaust pulses from the engine to shake the whole lot loose :!:

If the original were quite hard to drill out I would say they were definitely stainless.

Just keep your eye on them, if the end section of your can starts to come loose just replace them :!:

I picked up some stainless steel rivets on ebay for mine, although where the strap overlaps itself I really needed a longer one there:-
