instant tyre repair

Had to fill my tyre with this awful stuff over the weekend. For the second time this winter on the very same stretch of the mountain road. (Verandah for those of you who know it, or care! - bloody fast too) Flat!

The problem I have is that the last time I used it, it covered my back wheel and has hardened like concrete. As the crappy tyre I used was only a stop gap measure I've left it until now (new shiny pilot sports!) to think about giving the wheels a proper clean.

I also assumed it would fall off with cleaning over the winter but no - it's stuck fast. I think it's basically latex but I have no idea what sort of solvent will work. If I really cant clean it I might have to rub the paint with a bit of wet and dry and apply a new coat.

Help! - I really want to get it sorted over easter so I can enjoy next week off with shiny new tyres and shiny wheels.

cant be latex, i use it all time on mtb wheels/tyres to run tubeless..it wipes off and doesnt set hard

..if it was indeed latex, hot soapy water would remove the residue

WD40 on a rag, works pretty well for removing balance weight sticky stuff or brasso.

I have one ready for emergencies (scotchbrite). And failing that a wire brush attachment for my drill.

So far tried alcohol (on myself and the bike!), silicon spray, wd40, active glass cleaner - whatever that is. Next - petrol, diesel, meths and thermonuclear weapon.

Oh if it were just inside I'd bang away with a wire brush or something. The stuff got sprayed everywhere and dribbled all over the outside of the wheel.

There was some sort of instruction about not going over 30 or summat?

Erm that's really hard to do over the mountain. So a couple of mile later I notice some foam emanating from the back of my bike and realize that the centrifugal (centripetal - whatever!) force must have been flinging the stuff out the hole quicker than it could set. D'OH

And there you have it. I had been warned off using this sh1t - but now I actually have a valid reason.

Get paddock stands, go to tyre place and do it proper like!

just an update. Petrol failed and washing really hard failed.....

SCOTCHBRITE did the trick. Oh and a shitload of elbow grease. Now have two very shiny wheels that I just need to touch up the dinks. New tyres on while Im off with the kids this week and reassemble!
