Shortening wheel base?

Post by LotusSevenMan »

Fitting a 43 tooth rear sprocket should shorten the wheel base a fraction. Does that mean quicker turn in/steering at the expense of higher speed stability or is that all cr*p? 8O

LSM,
in theory shorter wheelbase= sharper steering whether in the case with the firestorm a 43 t sprocket would cause that much of achange to give problems in a straight line i doubt it ,if it were a GSXR or similar then maybe as the geometry on supersports is sharper.
Went down the 15t front myself, didn't notice any difference in "chuck in" & the straight line obviously wasn't a problem.
Due a new chain & sprockets soon so might try the 43 rear sprocket for a change.
Cheers

When I fitted the single side rear I noticed that I could launch off the line muuch better without the front going skyward. The wheelbase is a little longer than standard with this set up.
So I guess you need to be careful getting used to your set up since the extra gearing will also want to make the bike wheelie!

Thanks guys.
I used to have a 15t on the other VTR I had (it came with it) and it was able launch itself. Remember one occasion outside a Ducati dealership (well we can all look/dream eh?) when in first gear I was coming off the sloped kerbed area at the front of their showroom and leaning left slighty to straighten up for the road. As the bike went off the slight kerb the VTR jerked and my hand took a large handful of throttle when I didn't expect it to. Front wheel aviating as I am leaning. Dire thoughts of losing it outside the Ducati dealership in front of others sharpens the mind!!!! Bike settled to a slightly wobbly touchdown and a fast away but I was a bit more careful with sloping kerbs after that!!!!!

I have just ordered the 43 tooth so we'll see what it's like.

you'll be fine LSM.
I had the same with a 4mm spacer under the shocker and lost zero stability. You probably wont even feel the difference with just the larger cog....except when you go to accelerate  It's still the best mod you can do to a storm for the money in my book :P
