cam coverN

Post by yorkylancs »

:D Nightmare, those japs must have real dinky fingers, the front cam cover is a complete bstd to get off! Managed it ok last time, must have put some weight on since,as try as i might, and using every tool in the box the last bolt behind the cam breather refused to be moved.Dont like paying dealer prices to do a job i can do myself, any suggestions? Rear cylinder is a piece of p**s,checked with feeler gauges, inlet measured around 0.14,exhaust was about 0.28.Might leave front till i have lost some weight,chipollatas....

The easiest way imo opinion is to remove the carbs although they will need balancing after re-fitting. I have removed the front cover as you are doing (and have done in the past) but it is quite tricky, also checking the valve clearances will be much easier with the carbs and surround plastic tray out of the way. Take some pic's as you dis-assemble if your not sure you'll remember how the plastic bits go back. I did remove the plug for the TPS (throttle position sensor) and the throttle cables (again make note of how they go) but I didn't remove the coolant hose, I found with a little patience I could maneuver the carbs out of the way enough to remove the plastic tray.

TIP, don't over tighten the cam cover bolts, it's very easy to shear one off. Best to use a torque wrench!

HTH,

Chris.

Agree with Chris about the tightening (from bitter experience) but I didn't rebalance the carbs after removal and can't say I noticed any difference TBH

Wait till the clacking gets louder and it could be a lot more than £70!

You don't need to remove the cam cover to replace the CCT, if thats the problem?
