recent poor starting/tickover

Post by yorkylancs »

All of a sudden the bikes gone from being a good starter to a poor one,it starts ok,usually first stab on the button. But even with full choke on the revs drop below 900,tried raising the idle speed, but once it sorts itself it revs to high. When it is warm it runs and holds its revs smoothly, its just that initial start up.The choke stops out,and doesnt seem to slip back, but even with the choke out,if i dont keep the revs up with the throttle,it cuts out.Mysteriously it clears once it is warm.Like i said i have not had this problem before,i had the tank off the other day,and if it was the vac pipes etc,i would expect it to run rough full stop..Any suggestions? :D

If it only runs with throttle open then its likely its running too rich? (or lean :? )
Whats the air filter like?
What happens if you push the choke back in?

Other possibility is that when you've had the tank off some muck has got dislodged and found its way into the carb

But my gut feeling is vac pipes
If you've only just run it in the garage there's enough fuel in the carbs to run for a good few minutes
In fact from experience there's usually enough to get you to the bottom of a long hill before it conks out!! :x
I've got an inferiority complex
But its not a very good one!

Just lifted tank, vac pipe is still in place, all others are right. When i push choke in it cuts out,as i said it runs spot on when warmed up.Its one of them, when you are tinkering all the time, you start to rack your brains whwt you might of left off,or put back wrong, cant really think of anything.Replaced plugs other week, and noticed rear looked a bit sooty, left hand can has a loose baffle tube in it,can hear it rattling a bit, wondering if that will make it run a bit rich.Cheers for your help...Yorkylancs.:D

Mine did this exactly the same.

A fuelling setup by Revolution Racing cured it.

Turns out when it was tinkered with last, they couldnt get it to run properly (Storms are finnicky for setup apparently) and so just whacked it uber rich to make it go. They also managed to mess the choke up somehow so it wasn't working properly either.

So... the rich runniing seems to be the main culprit. When the revs drop low enough, the engine's turning slow enough for the amount of fuel going in to flood it between revolutions is my guess as to why it stalls.

How many miles you getting to a tank? Now mine's set right, I get 95 easy before light on, but before was getting 80.

rubbish mileage, probably about 80.Must pay attention,Ben asked what it run like with choke in,i said it stalled.Just tried it before,as it was cold, and after the initial start-up,i knocked the choke off,it idled ok.It only strikes me as strange,as usually in the morning i run it for a mile or so before i knock the choke off.It seems to have gone to the other end of the spectrum, and only needs choke to get it started..Finnicky things indeed!!

just reading this and seeing what you guys are putting in for mileage..

i have been getting about 70ish miles inbetween each refil.
i have the electronic fuel guage and keep refilling when im down to the last block on the lcd.. not sure if that last block = reserve or i can use that last block before reserve...

also i get random cut outs at low revs.. not regular by any means.. usualy when sat at the lights or its just sat idleing when im warming her up before riding.

Choke Plungers are a favorite for sticking open.
Normally it's either due to
A) The cable has been diturbed and is not properly routed.
B) The grease in the spitter junction has dried out or is old and hard
C) The choke cable where it enters the crb has been pulled and isn't seated correctly. (normally the front one just to be difficult  )

Any or all of these can give you bad MPG or make it a bitch to start.Have a look and see if yours is Okay

Common fault on Storms, raise the tickover to 13-1400 RPM that'll fix it.
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

Or better still get the carbs balanced -this is the usual cause for it running lumpy and spitting back at idle

if you have the lcd display then your bike should be the same as mine which is an 02 or newer, you should be getting over 100 miles between fill ups i'd recon, the tank is a few litres bigger than older bikes but that didn't make a great difference to make it last much longer, should do about 130 to the tank on the motorway with luck....this is unless your thrashing it then the milage would probably get down to 70-80ish.
