Thunk my shock is gone!

Post by adfski »

Hi again....

How can I tell if my rear shock is knackered?

I have recently done both fork seals (aaargh!)

But whilst the handling is great now it does have a great big THUNK when I come off some bumps in the road.

It seemed to do it before i did my seals but I thought it was just rough due to the front being so ropey.

I dropped the front 5mm through the yolks to speed up turning and I stiffened the rear from 2 to position 3 as it seemed to sag a lot with my fat butt on it.

Went for a lap the other day and it was good but it skipped going round the waterworks on some rippled tarmac which I found a little unnerving. :?

cheers

Hows your chain tension? I get a thunk over rough stuff I allow the chain to slacken off.

Oh last time I checked it - it had plenty of slack. Can't be any tighter! But I will lube it and check it this weekend!

To be honest Adf the Storm has a very basic suspension set up so if the going gets a bit rough its not that hot at dealing with it. If you plan to keep it invest in a rear shock. Mine is a low mileage very mint bike but next to any sportbike post 2001 it is way behind in the handling department. The engine and comfort more than makes up for it though IMO.

Andy,
I'd say your rear shock spring is set to hard on the 3rd setting :!:

The standard Storm shock is sprung to hard and damped to soft.

The experts say you ideally need 8mm of static sag for the rear, the only way I could get anywhere near that with the standard spring was to use the lowest setting (number one).

I've now fitted a Maxton spring on the standard shock and I found it to be a definite improvement :!: A cheaper alternative to buying a better shock.

Chris.

PS. If your shock doesn't bounce up and down freely when you push down on the seat and you can't see any oil leaking out from it's seal I'd say it's OK. You should be able to control how fast it returns with the adjuster screw at the bottom.

cheers Chris! Coulden't find an adjustment for the rebound. Was looking at the top

I'm getting a good amount of sag I think will have a play with the rebound and get one of the setup guides out and have a play.

You'll need a fairly long flat bladed screwdriver Andy. The adjuster screw should be accessable from the righthand side of the bike (rear brake pedal side) unless someone had refitted the shock the wrong way around :!: It's slightly up from the bottom shock mounting bolt.

yeah I gave it a good scrub yesterday and found it hiding underneath a pile of crap!

I thought I had set it up when I first bought it. When I couldn't find it I thought I was going mad.

On a not so good note the bottom of the shock was quite oily but I'm hoping thats wd40 residue from when I lubed all the linkages a few months ago! 8O

Will have a play and keep an eye on it!

Don't go there - I think one of them might be leaking again.

Not even had a spin over the (ONE WAY) mountain this TT cause of these suspension issues. Can't go at it with any conviction if I'm not happy with handling.

Oh well I have a really nice mountain bike so I'll just have to play with that until the old dog is fit again.

I just know I'm going to need knew forks legs but I'm too drunk to care right now!
