Airbox Mod Playaround...

Post by Beast »

Came accross an old race article on the VTR1000F about an airbox mod and last stage of tuning from a friends archive.
Seeing i had a spare kicking around, thought i would give it a shot.
It involves triming the top of the airbox lid right down to just the surround which screws down and holds the filter in place.
So after about 20 mins i managed to cut it down and take out my K&N and put in a spare BMC filter i had.
Well... can't believe it, there certainly is a power increase and the throttle is far more responsive than i thought!
All i need to do now is retune the carbs.
My VTR has been dynojetted sometime ago.
Can't find anything about it being done on the net, so thought i would have a ask here to see if anyone has carried this out or know someone who has?

Ok, so I'm thinking

"great, I have a spare airbox from the donor Storm, I already have stage one jets set up, she has K&N filter and she's been dyno'd. All I need to do now is butcher the box, and maybe get some Moriwaki trumpets and Robert's your father's brother" 8)

Then after viewing and reading the first 2 pages with great interest, I read page 3 and :( what a let down.
I'd have to dig the old dyno sheet out to confirm it, but I pretty sure I got more BHP now, than he achieved with all that fannying about.

Let's know how you get on Beasty mate.

It looks like it never made it past 100bhp at the wheel
With k&n exhausts standard box and before the jet kit went in mine was showing 102 at the wheel
Hardly worth the effort if I remember right it’s the size of the air box that’s the problem on the VTR
It’s to small plus having no top on the air box means your pulling in hot air from the top of the engine
Hot air is less dens less oxygen so less power the way to go is an air box with a bigger volume with air feed from the front of the fairing and to make the best use of it you’d need to have the engine work done

I only had a hand written article with some drawings and thought ah got a spare box lets chop it up. :)

Great find warby, great read and it looks like that its not worth it unless you go the full way with lump upgrade and spend a few pounds.

Well i have noticed a slight power increase in mid range with the BMC filter in. Will try my K&N later, then give the carbs a good tune and let you know how i get on.
