Here is a strange one i have never come across before.
as you know im rebuilding the beast, and after putting the front end on etc etc i started her up to let her reach the temp required to make sure the fan kicked in, and it did so job done there.
However, all of a sudden the neutral light started flickering, and at the same time she started to miss fire and even backfired a few spits also. i shut here off and checked that it was not out of fuel as when i tried to rev her through she struggled to rev above 4000rpm and spat about like a choking dog.
keep calm i thought, turned the ignition back on, pressed the starter button and NOTHING, then the neutral light went out all together.
Bloodu strange as my last 4 never did this. put her in first, then second, then back to neutral and the light would not come on, tried to start and nothing.
Suddenly it dawned "what if", i lifted the side stand up, pressed the start button and BOOM, back to life she fired. then the neutral light came back to life, however while i revved her a bit i flicked the side stand down (whilst in neutral) she spat like crap and then cut out !!!!
What am i missing here people, as i know damn well on my last storm, you can start them with the stand down.....yet mine wants to die a painfull death if i go near the stand.
ahh well, nobody said this would be easy !!!
what the hell ?????
what the hell ?????

Sounds like the sidestand switch is ok to me as the bike started & ran ok when it was up. If you think about it the stand switch is doing its job perfectly well. It's the fact that the bike doesn't "know" it's in neutral and is cutting the engine due to the stand being down, which is the standard safety feature.
I'd say its the gear selection switch that indicates neutral is at fault.
If the neutral light's flickering then the intermittent signal from that in conjunction with the stand down it's telling the engine to stop, run, stop, run, stop, run. in quick succession. Resulting in a misfire... & starting issues.
Of course it may not actually be a faulty switch at all, it could be a mechanical issue (bike not actually holding fully in neutral) check your linkages are all tight etc. & check for vibration from the gear lever as it may be trying to jump into gear !
Sorry if I've not explained this too well as I've just come home from a 12 hour nightshift.
