Sheared manifold stud? Try this!

Post by AndyE »

All,

Doing a bit of work today on my VTR, I was removing the exhaust system.

Unfortunately one of the front manifold studs sheared, only leaving about 8mm protruding. I had been soaking it in Plus Gas for a few nights in preparation, but obviously that's not good enough!

I've been in this situation plenty of times before with different studs/bolts - and never succeeded with an Easy Out. They would just snap off in the hole, making a bad problem worse.

Mole Grips *never* work for me because you just can't squeeze the stud hard enough.

I have had success with welding a nut to the stud once.

A couple of times I've drilled and tapped the hole which takes ages and is hard to do accurately on an important/expensive component.

However, this time I thought I'd have a go with a different method - a vice!

I whipped the head off and clamped the vice around the fat unthreaded part of the stud - and tightened the handle using a big bar. It was so tight the vice was creaking.

Then I turned the head by hand. With a huge crack (where I thought I might have damaged the head or snapped the vice) it was undone.

This is definitely worth a try if you're stuck in this situation :-)

Normally your vice would be mounted on a surface, but I haven't bothered since moving house about a year ago!

I had the same problem with mine and it was the bottom stud like yours gave it a good soaking with wd 40 overnight
mole grips still no good
few sharp blows on the end of the stud with a hammer
and the mole grips spun it straight out
might be worth a try for any one else in this situation before removing head

I did try giving it a few knocks before trying to spin it out with the two nuts - but couldn't budge it at all.

I had most of the bike apart anyway (bought it last week as a non-runner, it's had a front CCT failure. I had planned to take the front head off to check for bent valves - No damage thankfully!)

Given that this stud has probably been in there for over ten years, I was chuffed to be able to get it out at all!

I usually give it a bit of heat with the gas, smack or 2 with a 2lb hammer then the mole grips will work. :)
