Yesterday went for a nice ride out, well nearly eighty mile acctually.(seem t get carried away ) I happen to stop and have a break, whilst doing so I noticed some thing strange about the rear shock.
On close examination, I noticed that at the lower of the chrome arm leading to the bottom of the shock was a circular rubbber, this looked like it had been pushed out of position as it was missaligned and looked as if it was falling out. Never noticed this before . Me dont thinks it should be like this.
If it's the rubber part about 1cm high and 3cm round that sits on the bottom of the shock rod inside the spring? it sounds like the bump stop that stops the top section of the shock damaging the bottom section of the shock if the suspension travels too far.
It could be that the shock is old and knackered and is allowing the suspension to travel too far causing the top to hit the bottom crushing the bump stop, or it could be that the bump stop has just started to perish and fall out.
Was thinking that myself . But was aslo wondering if the suspension isnt set right. Have never touched it since i bought the bike over a year ago. now thinking about it, it does seem hard.
Or could it be that now i have got used to the bike and tend to ride it much harder it,s showing signs of problems .
shes a 2001 and done about 15 thou. She only had around the 12 mark when i got her. I dont think any body had messed around as she looked a bit tired when I got her. Made no changes myself apart from paint work so I think everythings bog standard.
Hmmm I guess in the past the bike could have been carrying round a twenty stone bloke plus a pillion and not been adjusted correctly knackering out the shock, or it could just be the bump stops perished and decided to disintegrate.
cheers for that , i,ll keep me eye on it. Think i,ll have a go at altering the suspension see that helps any.
If it,s only the bump stop. It dont make it unsafe to use does it .
As long as you can guarantee the top bit's not banging into the bottom bit but I'd want it right, the back ends were never very good out of the factory. Obviously check the other linkages on there as we've seen the pics of what happens when they're not greased.
yeah I noticed what happens to them as well. I checked mine straight away and it,s spotless.
Think I will try and push the damper back in for now and keep me eye on it . If it goes again then some thing will have to be done. Thanks for yh words of wisdom m8 .
