Timing 180 degree's out

Post by mazsuper »

hi all

after living with my storm not revving past 7k and generally running a bit lumpy, i finally got the bike to someone who knows what he is doing and found that when one of my CCT's broke and i had manual ones fitted, that he (the mechanic) set the timing perfectly 180 degree's out

so what i am asking is have i done any damage ?

The exact same thing happened to mine.
I set the timing correctly myself and it's been fine :)

As Andy said it won't do any damage other than it not running properly. We've had a few who've discovered the valve timing had not been set properly (like yours 180 degrees out) when replacing a CCT.

Yup, it can be done.
Last weekend I did the annual service, tappets, plugs, oil etc.
Bike ran very oddly- exhaust was really barking, but wouldn't rev over 6500 cleanly.
Ran fine up to 5500, then sort of ran out of puff.

I ran it around for a week, but saw this thread one evening during the week, and tonight I've just reset the valve timing on the rear pot- easiest one to get to!

So that's it sorted.

Lucky, really, cause I had lifted off the plug leads and turned the engine over on the starter for a while to get some oil round it before starting it up, and I'd convinced myself that I'd damaged the ignition module.......
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Hi everone

I had excactly the same problem. The cam chain tensiner and my front cylinder went so I stripped the front cylinder to inspect the valves and piston. Thankfully there was no damage :D

When I reassembled the engine I had excactly the same symptoms as described on this thread. I was convinced I had ignition or fueling problems. After reading this thread I thought I should check the valve timing and sure enough it was excactly 180 degrees out. Timing readjusted and now she runs like a treat.

I only wish I had read about the CCT before mine failed. :!:

I understand the principles of engines to a certain degree but would love to understand why the engine only fails over 6500 rpm. I have rediculously loud ART race cans fitted so didn't really hear the mis-fire as I probably should (but can hear the difference now) but would love to hear an explanation for the engine failing.

Cheers
