cutting out

i was wondering whether one of you mechanical gurus could help.when i am riding in town the old bike cuts out now and again.she will start on the button straight away afterwards.this doesnt happen on motorways or any long rides.any help greatly appreciated.

alot do it at junctions etc..mine never did..but turn ur idle up a touch..certainly helps

thanks for the advice.noticed when i got home tonight she was idling a smidge over 1 so i will set to about 1.3.fitting remus exhausts this weekend and cannot wait to upset my neighbours.start work at 5 in the mornings so will advise them they no llonger need alarm clocks.

mmm if it's already idling at a thou and cutting out then sumfink else is up and raising it any higher is masking the underlying problem

Mine idles at about 800 -900 without any problems (97 - micron race cans K&N filter - dyno'd + rejetted)

Do your carbs need balancing?

As Wicky says, worth checking to see if your carbs are out of balance as that can make it worse :!:

Some people say they never have this problem while others do.

If the carbs are out of ballance, how would you go ahead and fix, is there a A-Z "how to". Love to strip mine apart and fully clean up.

There is one (which makes it easy) adjuster screw on the left-hand side of the bike, situated between the carbs up in behind the frame, accessible with a screwdriver. You obviously need a carb balancer whereby you attaches it's vacuum tubes, one to each carb. That is bascially how it's done :!:

No need to strip them for balancing normally :!:

Common fault raise the tickover to 1300rpm cures it.
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

I've got a 'morgan carbtune'. Brilliant bit of kit for synching up your carbs. I use it on all my bikes.

I use the same carb balancer as sirch345. Fantastically simple and accurate.

The blanking plug on the rear of the fwd cylinder is a bit of a pig to get in and out due to access. Once i balanced the carbs, i left the adaptor supplied with the balancer in place. I fitted a short section of tube and blanked off the end. Made future balancing much easier. Have a very short handled screwdiver to hand to adjust the carb adjustment screw. Balancing now just a 5 min job


If you want to remove the carbs, its quite a simple job. Just remember you need to drain the coolant first. Be carefull when removing the carb tops as the slider spring is ridiculously long.
