Got an electrical problem with the instument cluster...

Post by Hankie »

Hoping someone might have an idea on this. Took her out today after a few weeks lay up. Everyything fine for about 10 miles then I pulled up at a junction and noticed the temp gauge was hard over against the RH stop. Eek! Then noticed the odo and tacho were not working either, nor were the indicator warning lights, or the neutral light. It wasn't overheating so I pulled it over to check what was working and what wasn't -
Well basically everything works except the instrument cluster which is dead (with the exception of the oil warning light and instrument backlights which work as they should). The bike still runs fine and I was guessing it was just a fuse someplace. It wasn't - all fuses intact. Mucked about looking for a disconnected block connector but not done a serious fault-finding session on it. Battery is OK and fully charged.

Before I start pulling wires out looking for a break... Is there anything else that might cause this failure? If the cluster itself 'dies' are these the symptoms you normally see?

Regards,
Chris

OK, it was a block connector fault - had to remove the screen to find it. All OK now I hope!

I bet you if you make up a new earth lead connecting the earth lead at the voltage regulator directly to the battery negative terminal, any of these sort of problems dissappear .. I had exactly the same issues and couldnt work it out. It was just a notion I had to try and directly ground the earth eyelet at the vol reg to see if it helped ... as I had no real reason to suspect the earthing as it was all tight and grounded as far as i knew, i was obviously wrong.
