Paddock stands, any way around using one?

Post by Ratty »

Obviously cosmetic damage to my bike is not a concern but mechanical damage I'd like to avoid. I've got a paddock stand on it's way but I could do with working on the rear wheel over the weekend (and possibly the forks).

Any suggestions? I daren't try to stand the thing on the sump as that just screams "sh1t idea!".

Hi Ratty
i wouldn't take any chances ,especially if yer waiting on a paddock stand arriving. (i had a bad experience not too long ago)

You can use a trolley jack under the sump, with a bit of wood to avoid any damage, but you really need the back end supported and stable first :!:

Your obviously fairly handy wae yer bodgin etc,did ye not say you were going to weld up a set of crashbars :?: ,you could do worse than make up one of these at the same time ,much more stable than a rear paddock stand, and bike is rock solid when jacking up under the sump ,to work on front end etc:!:
£20 all materials.

Nice one BP :) that sounds way better than a lousy paddock stand.

Yeah should be able to knock one of them up easily, got plenty of box section and some big threaded rod laying about. Any chance you could tell me this measurement? I should be able to guess the rest.

That's a real good job there. (No, not the hangmans gallows pic though it serves a purpose). 8O
Looks just like my Abba stand.
I got lucky with that as while carrying out a house survey for some disabled persons equipment I came across a brand new rear stand and the front one they make too.
Chap was in his seventies and won't ride bikes again so aftera bit of chatting I got 'em both for 20 quid. Another 15 quid got me the right FireStorm adaptor kit (as the original was for a 'Blade). Result!!!

You just have to have some good luck sometimes to offset the rest of the cr*p in this life eh?

Yes, LSM ,
thats true,

the best deal i got was years ago, i had advertised my Suzi GS850 for sale or swap for a car.

A chap offered me a Ford Capri, he brought it to my house and i got a test drive, it was a beauty, but had a cracked headlight and needed 1 headrest replaced as his dog had chewed it.

I said to the guy,as well as the Capri, i'd need £20 or so to buy a sealed beam unit, and get headrest from a scrappy ,he said he had no money to give, but would give me another car, as he was desparate for my bike :? :!:

I assumed it was an old Capri for spares, ....he said no, its a kit car, a Dutton Pheaton,........i had no idea what he was talking about , till he drove me to his house to see it :!:
Im like WTF,,He's giving me that as well 8O :!: 8O

Anyway, it was a bit rough round the edges, but taxed and mot'd, had a Fiat 1.8 twin carb, twin cam engine , i ran it for 6 months over the summer, then sold it to a guy at work for £500 :!:

This was quite a wee bit of money 22 years ago, and all i asked for was £20 or so with the Capri :!: :!:

Ooohh. Weird.
I had a green Dutton Phaeton with a Fiat TwinCam on board a few years back that I bought off the guy who was buying my house. I bought it as a cheap alternative to a Caterham as I also had a Lotus Esprit S3 at the time so no money for a proper Caterham.
I never really sorted it out so sold it in the end for about 850ukp and the Esprit to my brother to raise some cash towards a real Caterham!!!
