Speedo MPH gauge not lighting up

Post by Seven Of Nine Firestorm »

Is there a quick step to changing the bulbs or what to look out for on the Speedo, comming back one night thought thats very dim and only the trip meter was lighting rev and the rest are ok, just the MPH isn't lighting up.
I'm assumbing you undo the main support bolt at the back attatched to the frame, then undo the connectors take out and simple twist pull change the bulb or is there more to it.

RedstormV posted a sticky thread here which points to a downloadable illustrated Honda service manual in PDF that is a useful reference in conjunction with the Haynes manual for everyday jobs and more

IIRC you'll need to get at the back of the instrument console to access the speedo bulb - 3 bolts and viola

You got it, just 3 bolts out and you can turn the unit around enough to get at the bulbs (which just pull out). Two had gone in mine when I bought it in Spring, so I bought a dozen spares thinking it was going to be a regular problem. Not had another bulb go yet though.

May as well change them all once you are in there Nas.
Sure as eggs is eggs as soon as it's back together the others will soon go.
It'll save you having to pull it apart twice in the long run

Is Type E 12v 5W Lucas No 501 (Bulb T10) ok to use or will the extra 4 watts blow anything.

:? :? :?
Now you're getting technical 8O
Is that an extra 4w per bulb or 4w total. If so, how many bulbs?
If V=IR
and P=VI
we should be able to work it out

or better yet, How much from Fowlups? sometimes they can surprise you on prices, even on Honda original

Kinda heard the word 50p a bulb but the ones i've got are 12V 5W perhaps they will either light up dimmer else too bright. Just glad the gauge is lightening up now was a nightmare trying to see what speed I was doing at night head creaping closer to the yoke, Guess I should have checked before opening the pack. ah well lol.
But fook me is a easy job, just 3 bolts to undo, then I found out I was missing one of those metal spigot things under the rubber at the bottom. Disconnected two connectors simply lifts out then easy access.

It will work, but it will be brigther... but also hotter! So (correct me if i'm woring) there's a small possiblilty that it could start melting the plastic... so I would keep an eye on it!
