Can Alteration

Post by Stu »

Hi - Can anyone help as I have MIG cans on my bike which I love the look of but they are way too quiet for my liking.

Anyone know how I can get more noise with keeping the cans?

Have they got removeable baffles? Not trying to teach you to suck eggs but do they have an allen key style bolt at the tail of each can? I had two different sets on my Storm but both were ***ing loud. No baffle material at all, it was just a question of what type of loud you wanted; Deep or Deeper. 8)

I've had quite a bit of experiance with modding cans over the last few months. First off taking 4" out of my Microns then building my own cans for my seat conversion. First off you need to work out how the cans are held together. My Microns had an allen bolt that was sat just inside the outlet spout. This took a bit of finding because it was all covered in black soot but once undone the whole can just pulled apart and then just a case of cutting it down and rebuilding. If i remember correctly Mig cans are riveted together if this is the case then you will have to drill out the rivets to get the end cap off then see whats inside. A good idea if the just want to turn them into race cans is to get intouch with Jason at http://www.pjengineering.co.uk/index.asp he can supply you with everything you will need to do the conversion. I would get the correct size perforated inner tubing for the Mig cans then repack them and keep the original insides for if you want to put them back to standard. If you need any help drop me a pm always happy to help. :D

Only a suggestion, but did you check both ends for baffles as I believe some fitted baffles in the front end of the can and not in the normal position at the rear, in a bid to leave them looking like race cans but with less noise.

Cant see how a pair of cans with no baffles can be quiet 8O Even long carbon race cans are v loud and the carbon does tends to pull down the db's a tad

As you look in the end it has a narrow exhaust port - I did check to see if it was a baffle but went right down. Going to take them apart this week - also bidding on some buthered ones on ebay at least I will be able to see the workings without pulling mine to bits 1st

Pete Carr from the VTR list modified some many years ago and provided engineers drawings of the modification to boot!

If I remember right the migs have small tubes in the exit of the cans to restrict the noise.

I think you can simply dremil these out if you are careful without breaking the cans down.

If you live anywhere near Nottinghamshire my mates at JACexhausts would be able to help you for a small cost.

yep they do have the tubes at the end - so will have to unleash the dremmel :? I'm miles away from Notts and have no spare exhausts so can't bung them on if I posted them to JAC

BTW whats the VTR list?
