New rear sprocket (+2 teeth)... new chain too?

Post by JohnD »

I've got a new rear sprocket (+ 2 teeth) which i'm gonna fit...

.. now people say that if you change sprockets you should change the chain too. What do you lot think?

if the chain and front sprocket are in good nick then leave them. assuming you have a std 16t front sprocket then the std chain will fit but the rear wheel has to go right forward

That rule-of-thumb only really applies if your chain and sprockets are worn out, as fitting new sprockets to a well stretched chain will only accelerate the wear on your new sprockets, which will shorten their lives and visa-versa (new chain on old sprockets) :!:

Providing your existing chain and sprockets are in reasonable condition you should be fine with just renewing the rear sprocket.
