Pothole...

Post by Hankie »

Hit a fecking pothole over weekend, didn't see the thing until the last second and it felt deeper than an open mineshaft. Gave the steering head a right thump and I was damn lucky it wasn't on a bend. Tyre survived I think (worrying that there may be invisible damage tho). Anyhoo, the steering is now sort of 'vague', with a noticeable knock over light bumps. I guess it could have just loosened the bearings but it was a hard enough bang to have damaged them. I'll try adjusting them and if that don't work replace them. I saw some cheap (ish) taper rollers on fleabay and wondered if anyone here has used them? or bite the bullet and get proper Honda ball bearings?

I used two set of pyramid bearings last year when I had my wheels on my viffer sprayed just before its mot went for its mot and low and behold it failed yep you guest it wheel bearings had to get a new set so the cheap bearings ended up costing me more them 1 ½ time what they should have and all the work of taking them out and putting in the new ones :x :x

So personally I wouldn’t use them and I’d rather spent the little extra on a descent set

You confirm my own bias :)

Not sure the merits of taper rollers actually fit with the engineering demands of a steering head anyway. A high axial loading isn't necessary, and if taper rollers are not seated exactly right they'll bind and/or rapidly go out of adjustment. I'll look out for some genuine parts.

Not necessarily OEM Chris,

Just get 'good' equivalent bearings - you should save on OEM prices

When I had the OEM ball bearings in I was always adjusting them (well, twice a year). Since fitting the taper roller bearings they haven't needed any adjustment at all in 2/3 years.

Says it all IMHO :D

Finally got around to checking the SH bearings, and they're truely knackered. It not subtle damage either, the steering drops into a deep notch near straight-ahead position. Well I ordered some taper bearings (after saying I wouldn't!) from Wemoto http://shop.wemoto.com/pictures.dyn?u=25299qqq25618 - I've had good service from them in the past so I expect quick delivery.
