strange performance issue.

Post by chuxsta »

i am sure i have read something similar to what im about to mention not long after i joined here.

the day my battery died and i posted in here a day or 2 ago i also noticed the bike feeling a bit lumpy in first gear around 2-4k rpm. but only when i sat a constant rev in that range..
it felt almost as if it was about to run out of fuel.. it went all lumpy....
i am also getting the issue that some one else mentioned about the revs dropping sitting at 2krpm for a milli second then resting on tickover..

and also starting the same time when i start her up and she is on choke i always wait till she is at least at 50c before i go any where.
the revs will slowly drop till she cuts out.. if i rev her a bit it stops it for a few seconds until it happens again.
this issue stops once she is warmed up fully and been thrashed a bit.
also the revs dont sit they bounce around a bit..

its all started since the super cold day with oooodles of snow we had here.

Mine does exactly this too.

In my investigations - I haven't yet come across a definitive answer.

Mines a bit like that, spesh now the cold weathers here.I think it takes a while to get used to how bikes feel in the cold weather. If i am stood at a junction it spits back from under the tank, sometimes cruising up to a junction on a closed throttle it cuts out for a split second. All storm traits i think, just exaggerated by the cold.Chuxs you could try balancing your carbs, just done mine and it feels a little better, also i tend to turn the idle up a bit this time of year, helps just to keep things going while it gets up to temp. What about your dodgy battery, that wont help things..

in addition to my original post..

when starting it up this morning, when the bike started to drop revs and eventually cut out i tried holding it at a constant rev and it still did the same.
even with the revs held at 4k it would very very slowly drop, with the throttle held solid,

then to add even more strangeness to the problem i turned her off to go finsih my cuppa tea and a roll up or 4 when i started her back up to go to work she was fine.. sat ticking over with no choke at 1krpm rev needle not moving a millimeter...

Could be a split in one of the carb diaphragms.
I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.

changed oil, oil filter and air filter today, and did the airfilter mod / airbox bar removal..

admittedly it was no where near as cold today as it has been so that might have had a lot to do with the bike not running like i had filled it with lard for petrol.

there was a huge difference in the way it felt... it just felt smoother.

real test is the next super cold day before i leave for work and im already running late..

Chuxsta,
A good idea to change the air filter (as you have done) if you don't know how long it's been there, as you can't tell how many miles it's done just by looking at it.

Glad too hear the bike seems to be running better so far. As you say a cold morning will be the real tester.

i have a really sneaky suspision that the battery or something related to that area is causing one of the problems....

if i start her up with the lights turned off till she is fully warmed up there is no problems...
when i turn on the lights and leave her warm up thats when the revs drop ever so slowly till she dies... if i blip the throttle its ok for a min or so then it does it again....

think the optimate is a thing to try next after hearing so many praises on them.

hey chuxsta, sounds like my storm is going through the same problem as yours! Was fine til the snow last week and been lumpy ever since. yesterday morning whilst it was struggling to idle at some lights, i noticed that mine stunk of petrol, even though the choke was off and everthing. I stopped for a bit and it started her up again, and no problems idled fine smelt normal, like your did. Maybe they just dont like cold early starts. I know i dont
