I can see my suspicions are now confirmed, also I can see it is the front cylinder that the CCT failed on,

Aye, not a happy bunny at the minute. Fortunately the spare rear cylinderhead that came with the bike still has the exhaust valves in it, and they seem to be straight.

Just ordered a head gasket from david silvers and will start work on it as soon as it arrives (weather allowing of course)

Have you or anyone else replaced the valves? Just wondering if there are any tips or anything I should watch out for? Particularly removing the cam chain, and selecting the right shims?

I haven't had to replace any valves myself yet (touch wood) but I'm sure someone who has will soon be along. But I do know you want to make sure you keep the cam chain fairly taught when turning the engine over to get the valve timing set, you do not want it to start wrapping itself around the crank.

I realise you have to remove the c/head first to sort out the valves, but once that's done this is the next stage.

You'll need to set the rear cylinder valve timing first, then turning the engine over Anti-Clockwise 450 degrees (one and a quarter turns) and lining up the FT mark with the mark on the alternator cover you can then refit the camshafts for the front cylinder. You can read how to set the rear cylinder valve timing, lining up the marks etc in the link below if you've not already done so. Once you have done the above start to refit the camshafts, keeping the cam chain taught, replace the front camshaft (exhaust) first, followed by the inlet cam shaft. Any slack from the cam chain should be at the back of the cylinder where the CCT normally takes care of that.. The marks on the camshafts should be facing away from each other level with the top of the cylinder head. (FE = front exhaust & FI = front inlet) Also make sure that the cam lobes are facing towards each other by a certain amount not facing away from each other.

This is all still fresh on my noggin mate,as for timing just follow Chris's info,
other than that with the head off,mine took out the guides on both damaged valves(that bumped the bill up nicely),as for the shimming thats the only bit i didnt take a chance on,i gave that to the local(45 miles away)honda dealer,finding the right sizes(f**k it let them sort it)& messing about wasn't worth the hassle.
I wouldn't worry to much about the chain(don't mean to sound to complaicent)but it hasn't got any where to go really,you'll know when your refitting if its trapped any where,stick a cable tie round it just incase,then obviosly to some thing sound like the dog or the missus :D
