Spongy Clutch

Post by Stu »

My clutch has got really spongy with quite a bit of free play - biting point is almost right in which it wasn't a week or so ago. Could this be caused by the hydralic fluid being crappy - looks plenty in there but can't remove the top as pi55ing it down outside and no cover :(

If so how easy is it to change the fluid and bleed it? 1st time I've had any issues with hydralic clutch so unsure :?

Cheers

Changing the fluid should be quite straight forward if you replace the old with the new as you go. Just keep topping up the master cylinder reservoir as you pump the clutch lever, making sure you don't let the reservoir run out completely before topping it up. You'll need a piece of clear hose attached to the bleed nipple on the clutch slave cylinder going into a jam jar and should be able to see when the new fluid starts coming through.

Open the bleed nipple then pull the clutch lever in and hold, tighten bleed nipple, release clutch lever and repeat process making sure you keep an eye on fluid level as you go.

You can get different colour brake/clutch fluid to make the job easier if you wish,

Chris.

PS. It could be that you pushrod for the clutch is all gunged up from chainlube and is sticking.

Check the other clutch related threads below. Possibly also piston seal and/or (grit) scores on slave cylinder housing allowing seepage.

If it's damp be careful of contaminating the hydraulic fluid with any water!
