Oh lol, just had a text about my mate's birthday that I was talking about.
It starts "I know it's short notice but...."
He is planning a night at the dogs on Friday and an all day session in Leeds on Sat. So much for the camping weekend he was organising. I told you he couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery.

Re: Op Storm Bonny Scotland 16-18th August 2013
just been trying to get things finalised: management have felt my wrath. ...
trying to get flight back up to Edinburgh from Heathrow about 12. so should be out of airport by 2, travel to Hamilton to get the bike and hoping to be shifted and loaded for 4 ish. should only take me about an hr to get to Gretna. so can meet up with you 2 on your way up, or let me know if your taking a more scenic route and we can make alternative point.
I will pm my mobile number to you both.
shopping done.: instant coffee and Singleton- what more can a man ask for

Good news, sounds like you will be close to the same schedule as us.
Once we get to Carlisle (filling up at the golden fleece petrol station where the A6 joins the M6) I was going to make a decision to either go direct to Dumfries on the A75 or to go up the A7 to Langholm, up the B709 to Eskdalemuir then back to Lockerbie, then to dumfries...then the coast road to dalbeattie and kirkcudbright.
So if we leave settle at 4.30 via Hawes then into kendal and up the A6, and you leave Hamilton at 4. Will you be able to get to the golden fleece at the same time?

Grumpyfrog.
I have done a quick calculation and would say if we leave Settle at 4.30, we should be at the Golden Fleece in less than 2hrs [90 miles]
so does 6.30 at the Golden Fleece services http://goo.gl/maps/urdwGwork for you?

Quick one here:
How are you going to charge your phone over the weekend?
I was thinking about it last night, and I have no idea. I need to work something out.
Other than that, I am all packed and ready now, just going to pick up a sleeping bag and air bed from my parents at lunch time.

Chris,
I have a 12V power socket under my seat and if you have a USB charging lead you can plug into that.
also come Saturday night, if the weather is bad, we can move into the house if we want to, so all mod cons available

I will be there 4pm ish and having a coffee. As weather on friday looks good and I still have the day off I will be coming the long scenic way...... up to Ashbourne, Glossop, over the high moors, Holmforth, Rippendon, Hebdon Bridge, Keighley, Skipton then into Settle
looking forwards to this now

I packed tonight and loaded the bike. 1 pair jeans, 3 t shirts, shreddies and socks, trainers, a jumper, BO basher and camera.
Cant wait now. Come friday just roll my bike out and it's ready to go. Waterproof covers on just in case, everything else bagged in bin liners.
Im actually quite looking forward to trying out the new textiles. I think ill set off with the thermal liners in, and remove if needs be, my paniers are nowhere near full, not even unzipped to full width.

Chris, I found the oxford waterproof covers were blown apart if you allow them to flap loose in the wind. Make sure they are tightly on if you can

same here. either wrap a bungie cord round them, or smarter still put your gear in bin bags and don't bother with the coversneil wrote:Chris, I found the oxford waterproof covers were blown apart if you allow them to flap loose in the wind. Make sure they are tightly on if you can

you want to get yourself a big waterproof roll bag. prity cheep, about £15 then stuff all your bin bags into that, roll tight and fit to bike.
6:30 at the fleece is grand. gives me an opportunity to come the twisty way down if I have the time.

Alistair, do you fancy going via Kirkby Stephen and a bit of the A66 instead of via Kendal? The road up to the A66 is quite nice. Avoids a bit of a stretch on the M6 too. Only need to be on there for 1 junction.

happy to do either, the A6 from kendal to Penrith is a bit special too, and both options use the same 1jkt on M6 to skip Penrith town then back onto A6Miztaziggy wrote:Alistair, do you fancy going via Kirkby Stephen and a bit of the A66 instead of via Kendal?
