you have to remember your bike is 16yrs old Jamie, almost as old as YMV....
so it's never going to be super reliable, and it's not as if you pootle about on it...
have a good look at the charging system, starting with the r/r, at least you now know your starter motor is ok....

My money is on the battery. What you don't want is a dodgy battery taking out a good R/R as the R/R tries to charge a damaged battery and ends up shunting more, even to the point of overheating and therefore damaging the R/R :eek2

First step is to charge the battery fully. Then check the output from the R/R and make sure the charging system is all well. Monitor the battery to make sure that it's receiving a charge.

tbh the battery seemed ok, the lights on the dash were very bright, I reckon either r/r or the thingy inside the engine case on the flywheel side, can't remember what it's called....
the old starter motor was staying hot for a long time after the engine had been stopped, so maybe there's an issue with the power cable from the starter motor?

Good shout, I'm impressed with you methods of diagnosis   See I do give you credit where its due

I put a multimeter on the battery when it wouldn't start yesterday and it was low IIRC 12.3 or 4. Stator is what you where thinking of, flywheel side

Thanks for your thoughts, been thinking about what it could be today. I was convinced it was the starter motor as Marty says, the lights etc were very bright and the starter motor was hotter than the engine!

Last week my bike wouldn't start, as the battery was dead (or so i thought) so i changed the battery, changed the RR and left it on the optimate all week.

I haven't got any testing equipment, except a broken multimeter.

I'm hoping I've got a crappy earth or something.

Kinda run out of money too :(

But next year, i think I'll order a motobatt battery, Mosfet RR and a multimeter.

You can get a multimeter for a fiver these days. Most likely not the best but it will do the job.

What's the reason for the fuel pump Lloydie? Are you expecting fuel starvation?

Not yet but it's a mod I'm testing for piggy as these do suffer with fuel starvation on long fast right hand bends on the track and that's why Roger had them on the mori race bikes .

Pluss when I fitted one to the blade it did have a positive affect on fuelling and gave a smoother but stronger throttle response .
But it's more for the big right handers that I'm doing it and with the larger tank it's easier (I hope) to get fuelling right without the other parts from a later bike .
All being well on the test ride I'll be able to run the tank dry this time :-)

Ah right, every day's a school day  Do you think I'll get starvation with the Vara tap?
