I was pressed into service to drive my brother in law to #4 of his 5 lung cancer radiation treatments. This requires long hours in the car, fighting traffic and construction while making polite conversation. Then, of course, when I got there and drop off my wife and the patent, I had time to kill. It was lunch time so I went across the street to Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse. This is one of very few old time Texas pit barbeque establishments left in Dallas. It looks like absolute hell. It is in the middle of industrial buildings that have grown up around it and is surrounded by a parade of homeless people with all their belongings in shopping carts. The inside is dark, like a cave and everything smells of Mesquite wood smoke. It also has a look of a place where the walls have not been wiped down since it was established around the time of The Great War. I got a chopped beef brisket sandwich, an order of onion rings and an ice tea and sat outside in the cool breeze and warm sun. The temperatures were in the 70s and it was perfect. I ate my sandwich, flicked pieces of bread to the grackles (a crow like bird) and truly enjoyed the moment. Then the homeless people finally noticed me and i was forced to move on due to the attention.
